Ok , I need some input here. My truck has over 200,000 miles on it and I need a new one and I'm wondering what brand you gals prefer.

I have my everyday car and only use my truck for pulling my trailer and getting feed so I don't want to sink a fortune into it.

I currently have a 2 horse trailer , but may getting a larger one in the future so I don't want to get something that doesn't have the power to pull a larger trailer. I don't have a brand preference , but hear that Ford tows better than Chevy (NO FLAMES PLEASE ) and stopping to me is as important that pulling ,so which brand has the better breaking system ?

So what kind of truck do you haul your trailer with ? How long have you had it , and how many miles are on it ??

Thanks

OH YEAH ... Diesel is a MUST !!!

As you can tell by some of my posts, We are Ford people. But hubby has own Dodge and Chevy too.. The Fords seem to be better with towing and He has never had issues with the Brakes.. Hubby has a 2001 F350 Superduty and he did buy the kit for the braking system for when he hauls his show Bronco. But he did is a extra safety procaution. But it hauled great before the new box thingie for the brakes. I even had an explorer and it will well towing/hauling.. But JMO..ANd he has had 23 trucks since we have been married.. All the Fords have done well..(we have had that many because my hubby buys them, fixes them up they way he likes them and sells them when he get bored with them, not because of problems...

Ford diesel, we had almost 500,000 on ours with not major problems ever.

Nothing but FORD!! haha I don't know anything about vehicles since I can't even drive cause of my vision.

But I do know that most of family is all about Ford and my mom's truck is a Ford and I like it a lot - full back seat and seems to run well, desiel etc.

My husband has always been a Ford man but bought a used Dodge a few years back and then a new 4x4 Dodge and like it better than the Fords we have had.I would suggest going to each Dealer finding the truck with what you want in it and taking each brand for a test drive and getting information on each. Then make your mind on which one.

Google Ford diesel turbo and you will understand why I changed my mind and bought a chevy. I have a 2006 duramax diesel with the 6 speed allison transmission (automatic), 3500 dually. I LOVE my new truck and it has a whoppin 3,000 miles on it just since December!

I was set to buy Ford, especially since my cousin who is a Ford lawyer could get me the family discount, but the turbo problems are a major turnoff. I mentioned to my cousin that fact and she said oh yeah, those engines are cr#p. That would be the 6.1 litre. I hear the 7s are good. Ford is redesigning the engine, so in the future they should be better. If you buy used, get one that doesn't have this engine in it, I think the engine is only a few years old so you may be safe with an older one.

Our truck is used only for towing other than that I drive it once a month or so to work just because it's probably not good to let it set and not be used. We bought it about 18mos ago used. It's a gold 2000 Ford F150 supercab Lariat Flareside. It has a 5.4L V8 with transmission cooler and a trailer breaking thing installed. It less than 50,000 miles on it and looks brand new. I love it -- but then it's my first "grown up" truck.

It tows our two trailers fine but one of them is a bumper pull that can be towed by a small SUV if need be. We have a 14' long, 6' wide, 6' tall aluminum miniature goosneck trailer from Wrangler that can hold 7 minis (5 in the stall sand 2 in the dressing room which is matted and has a swinging wall). The truck has no problem with it. I think that the shorter height of the trailer is a factor in it being easy on any truck.

DODGE RAM!!!!!!!!!!!!! All the way. Had Ford and Chev and swear by the big purple bus I have now. 2500 Cummins TURBO deisel and has bags and bags of tow power. Will NOT bog on long hills pulling a 10,000 lbd gooseneck 6 horse trailer fully loaded with 5 warmbloods. Great on fuel, nice ride and just as strong as heck...

I'm in the same boat.

I have a Ford F150 V8 extra cab AND IT WILL NOT PULL MY TRAILER!!!!!

It did at first and that wrecked the tranny. A 150 does not have enough TORK to do the job and a 250 is "iffy"

I can get another engine and another tranny but then I'll just wreck it all over again when I try to haul so at this point, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. All our vehicles are paid for and I would really hate another monthly payment that would outlive me!

I'm a Chevy fan myself. :bgrin I have a GMC Sierra HD diesel that hauls like a dream. I put a camper on and pull a loaded 3 horse trailer and we sail up and down the mountain passes.......just love it!

:smileypuke: :smileypuke: :smileypuke: :smileypuke: DODGE, I will NEVER own another. I am on the road every single day and that Dodge truck I had was NOTHING BUT TROUBLE. I swear it was possesed. I now have a F250 gas [can't justify a diesel because of work] and it has been great for towing. The Dodge Ram I had I bought brand new and custom and it was horrible it had NO power at all. Recently I got to drive a 2007 model to see if anything had improved but it seemed like a flimsy little toy next to my F250. I also like Chevy, GMC, and Toyota and I would choose any one of them over a Dodge. Linda B

I bought a 2007 Chevy Silverado last year the day before I left for Nationals. It now has about 15k miles on it *gulp* and it hauls great, no problems in the cold (Maine winter!) or heat. Everyone around here that I know is a GMC/Chevy person for towing. My only "complaint" is that it's not very comfortable to sleep in LOL

My husband bought a brand new F350 diesel in 1999. He loved that truck. Last year he sold it with over 380,000 miles on it (mostly towing miles).......and yes, he bought another Ford.

We have had lots of fords and also one dodge - no diesel - but I would ALWAYS choose a FORD from here out - superior trucks in my mind.

again, have never had diesel

I personally have an 01 GMC 3500 Dually. It has the big gas 8.1 engine in it, TONS of power. We got it last year, my boyfriend couldn't justify the extra $5K for a diesel when I only put 4-6 thousand miles a year on it. I LOVE

: my truck, Chevy and GMC are really good. We are in the repair business and we say (no flames) we like Fords because they keep us in business, but we drive Chevy/GM's

If you are buying new, DO NOT buy a Ford, due to the problems already listed with them. Every single customer that has gotten one with the new diesel has had SEVERAL turbos (per truck) replaced. We aren't talking one or two customers, I would say at least 9 or 10. Two customers were bought out of their trucks. If you buy a used Ford, make sure it has the 7.3 Powerstroke diesel in it. They are great motor, we also have several customers in the 300K mile range.

Good luck, but my vote is CHEVY/GMC! :bgrin

We had a 2003 F250 (7.3 litre Diesel) and it was awesome! Hubby wrecked it going 95 mph (yeah it was a DUMB thing), rolled it 6 times and he survived w/only a few scratches, a bump on the head and a terrible seatbelt bruise...so we bought another 2004 F250, it is the 6.0 litre Diesel. I LOVE this truck. It has way more power than we ever need, and I recently trailered a horse to its new home in four inches of fresh snow over hills and it worked great.

I MAY get another truck in the next year or so, and looking for another Ford. Can't stand the others, have driven and know people w/them and they seem really junky to me plus the Dodges are wayyyy loud.

Good luck w/your shopping!

(oh the Ford Diesel is made by International, which is a very well-respected Diesel company, and they have a 100,000 mile engine and drive train warranty)

I'd rather push a Ford than drive a chevy. If I had to buy something other than a Ford, I'd buy a Dodge - but I CANNOT imagine that happening. There is a good reason Ford outsells dodge and chevy in trucks every year - they're just plain better. I haven't found anything our F-350 dually cannot pull - whether a horse trailer or a 20,000 ound 5th wheel. And when we towed the 5th wheel we did it at just over 18 MPG!

When not pulling we have regularly gotten around 24-26 MPG on the highway.

We have a 2001 with the 7.5 litre diesel. I know they had some problems with the turbos on the early 6.0 litre engines - but that has been ironed out. If you really want to see a hot truck, google the 2008 Ford F-450, which will be out in late April or early May this year. Stock towing capacity is rated around a whopping 24,000 pounds!

As they say - Why ram it when you can powerstroke it?

And - REAL trucks DON'T wear bowties! :aktion033:

I knew there was another reason you were cool, Mark!

;)

We love our Fords and we would have stuck w/the 7.3 if we could have, but the truck we wanted at the time was only available in the 6.0 and it was from the first months of production, so yes, we did have a few glitches/recall stuff, but it was really fine and though our local dealership has a crappy service dept., that truck's been awesome and we're now pushing 90,000. We had only put 21,000 on the '03 before Martin rolled it, but prior to that we'd owned a new F150 every other year since 1992. We also had two Ford vans, and a Ford Bronco (early 1976) and now have a Lincoln, two more old Broncos as well. Guess we have Blue Oval fever.

Yeah, the 2008s are kinda cool but I'm not so sure about the interior...anyway, I'm a die-hard Ford fan for the 800,000+ miles we've put on Ford vehicles (mostly trucks, but who's been doin' that longer than Ford?) w/very few problems.

I have a 2.5 litre diesel Ford Transit Van- it does 30 miles to the gallon, passes it's emission test each year and id diesel.

Why on earth would you want/need a 7.5 litre when a 2.5 litre does the job just as well and there is less pollution and more mileage?????

Most of us cannot pull our horse trailers with a 2.5L engine. That wouldn't even pull my mini bumper pull stock trailer much less the gooseneck.
