I was just wondering how many are going to bake or deep fry their turkey for Thanksgiving? We deep fried ours the first time last year for christmas it was GREAT! So we will be doing 2 this thanksgiving. Kathy

Well I convinced my mother to bake it this year. She normally deep frys it but I hate it that way.

We'll be going to the folks for Thanks Giving dinner. Our family just bakes the turkey. I've heard deep fried is really yummy and I would'nt mind trying it one time!

There is no way I would break family tradition around here and fry the thing.

I bake it using a browing bag, that way, no basting and you always know when it's ready because the legs will try to fall apart on you. And oh, the clean up is so much easier too. I even use a disposable pan with handles. We usually get a 20 pounder. We're pigs.

Lightly flour the inside of the basting bag, salt and pepper and butter your turkey birdy and shove him in. I usually add some celery under his armpits and just a slice of onion very sparingly for a bit of flavor in the bag.

I call it Roasting -- not baking --- but I guess it is the same thing.

Have never tried the deep fried (in peanut oil?) turkeys.

We probably will go out to eat at Golden Corral instead.

Lots of selection - good food - no cleanup and best of all - no leftovers!

NO LEFTOVERS?????

You say that is a GOOD THING????? Tell me it isn't so!

Leftover turkey is what I love best about Thanksgiving... in fact, since we go to two family dinners where they get to keep the leftovers, we buy our own turkey to nibble on like leftovers -- we just keep it in the fridge and rip off hunks when we want (pretty funny for two who rarely eat meat...) Then when we can't pick off any more, I make an everything in the refrigerator soup --- yum!!

But I LOVE the leftovers!!

I will be roasting mine.......however my sister has taken to doing hers in her weber bbq and ohhhh yummm is it ever good......in days gone by I have also had a turkey cooked on a coleman stove in a roasting pan (power was out), we have roasted on top of the woodstove (power was out) .........once i believe we roasted it over a pit fire as well (because the stinkin power was out) ...the areas of western washington I lived in were well known for thanksgiving day windstorms ...always lead to the power being out......we are creative cooks

Never tried the deep frying.......

We're doing the traditional roasting here. Got about a dozen people coming who are expecting the traditional stuff from "Ma" ..... Chestnut stuffing, homemade gravey, cooked cranberry and the raw cranberry/orange relish....etc.......

I'm making some of the other's bring a salad or desert.....seemed only fair....

We usually fry our turkeys when Bob makes them throughout the year,LOVE THEM, but on thanksgiving..well, thanksgiving just wouldnt be thanksgiving here with a fried turkey , so its a roasted one or two, for that day.

We get a HUGE one,

We have one of those turkey frier thing-a-ma-bobs, and it freaks me out!

Have you ever seen someone you care about very much attempt to get a gianormous turkey into one or out of one of those suckers!! Yeesh, it gives me the willies.

That having been said, they do taste wonderful, but I am not sure if the process is worth it. (There's a reason they used to used boiling oil back in the old days you know!) But it's Much quicker, the only downer is the lack of stuffing!

We usually have about 3 or 4 turkeys here, including a "normal" baked turkey, a fried one, a turducket, and then one my aunt and I experiment on to find new appealing ways to make a turkey.

We have a Very small blood family, but a huge extended one, and often have up-wards of 60 people in our dining hall. It's a mess, but a really wonderful time to spend the hoildays.

And I agree, left overs are the whole reason for the darn holiday! yummmy I can just imangin cold turkey sandwiches and stuffing with re-heated gravy... Oh I can't wait!

Am I the only one here that does not like the left overs? Gosh I feel so.....alone!!!
laugh.gif
Seriously tho, for me, the taste of left over turkey is too strong.....give me a mild tasting piece of meat anyday, once it gets to tasting...well...."turkey-ish" I'm gone!!
xreiter.gif
Now I don't mind the left over veggies, sweet potatoes, gravy and stuffing....but even regular mashed potatoes left over I'd rather not eat. Can yoll tell I once got food poisoning with left overs?

I usually don't leave anything in my fridge for more than 2 days...otherwise it gets thrown out or goes to the dogs. I guess thats probably why I'm so excited that I'm not cooking the big feast this year....I don't have to deal with ........leftovers!!!!

I like the leftovers BETTER than the first time around!! When we're invited to someone else's for Thanksgiving, I go home and make my own dinner on Friday JUST for the leftovers!!

Turkey sandwiches

Turkey a la king

Turkey and noodles

Turkey carcass soup

Fried mashed potatoe patties

Turkey and rice casserole with broccoli

Actually, I pick the carcass and freeze most of the leftover Turkey in bags that are the right quantity for other recipes. Then I boil the carcass and make great soup. Extra mashed potatoes are mixed with egg and made into patties and pan fried.

OH man....I can't wait until next week!! But then again, I make the full Thanksgiving dinner about 4 times a year, just because we love it so!!

Count us in for the leftovers too! We roast our turkey with an outstanding old family recipe sage stuffing - it's the best (IMHO). and for those who remember the thread from a while back on whether the men cook - Yes, I cook the Thanksgiving dinner.

And I have to make an extra pan of stuffing for my son Joel to either take home or send to him if he isn't here.

You have to have leftovers, how else do you get turkey tetrazzini? Hot turkey sandwiches? wow.

Even if we are invited out we do a turkey just for the leftovers, and we usually have turkey several times a year.

I have only had fried once, it was awsome, but scary to cook.

My brother and SIL usually roast one and smoke one.

yummmmmmmmmmmmmm
