Could anyone tell me at what point do your mares start to bag up, i have a mare who is at 270 days and she has the begining of a bag.

Small but there...

Is this normal for miniatures.....

Our mare who has had two foals before has a slight bag all year even if she isn't pregnant (compared to our other mares who have had no foals), so if she has had previous foals it may just be that. Both of our mares began bagging up around 290 or 295...270 sounds a little early to me, but I by no means am an experienced breeder. Every horse is different too

I hope everything goes well for you and your mare!

THIS IS HER FIRST FOAL, SHE WAS BREED IN JULY AS WELL AS AUGUST SO MAYBE SHE TOOK EARLIER THAN I THOUGHT AND LET THE STALLION BREED HER EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS PREGNANT..

I CHECKED HER BAG AGAIN THIS MORNING AND ITS THERE ALL RIGHT...IF ANYONE HAS A PHOTO OF THEIR MARES BAGS AT THIS STAGE PLEASE PLEASE POST THEM ....THANKS

It is uncommon for a stallion to breed a mare once she is already pregnant. So if she is that early you might want to discuss with your veterinarian putting the mare on Regumate and antibiotics along with some banamine and seeing if you can get this mare to carry the foal longer.

By the way, you are very observant to have noticed a change in your mare's udders at this stage.

Good job!

I'll have to beg to differ, LOL. My mare Missy who foaled this year was exposed to a stallion from May 30th 2009 to September 30th 2009 and we KNOW she took in June due to how developed the foal was, etc. but she let him breed all the way through September and her whole pregnancy she would vigorously show to a stallion and beg to be bred. Up until we seperated them, my stallion would always be more than happy to answer her requests.

This is the reason I do not tease my mares to confirm pregnancy. Will be using PREGNAMARE at a minimum of 40 days pregnancy and WEEFOAL 120 at the minimum of 120 days to confirm a lasting pregnancy.

But to answer your question, my mare began bagging at about 280 days and developed a huge bag about to bust and then shrunk to a 1/3 the size and a week later her bag developed huge again and she foaled a few days later.

LESSON TO BE LEARNED: Mares don't read the books!

My mare started early like that this year too. She was 273 days when I took the first picture. She isn't a maiden but had nothing before this time. As of today she is still holding out on me. She is 305 days today. Here is a picture of her bag on april 11th

And here was her bag last night.

Good luck and I hope your mare holds out.

I will say that for us this year, bag development has meant absolutely NOTHING! Our experienced broodmare's bag never got very big like 2 years ago and our other mare who just had her 2nd foal never had a bag until after she foaled! The 2nd mare did the same thing to me last year. She only had a little bit of edema in her udder the morning of the night she foaled! Honestly, since I know breeding dates - I just start checking them and keeping watch on them around 300 days, especially this year.
