i thought many of your might find this an interesting read. In particular this website was interesting to me while researching color genetics to identify my filly. The photos of the sooty horses are the reason we thought she was dunskin. Then add in that her sire is grullo, it added to the confusion. Her dam's side carry the sooty modifier strongly, so she turned out to be a real head scratcher as we eliminated through genetic tests. The further down you read the more interesting the modifiers they describe.

Fascinating!! Thanks so much for sharing. I think this answers a number of questions I have had about some of our mares and/or their progeny! Mira (our gray mare, genetically silver bay frame overo) seems to have a "bloody shoulder marking" on her barrel, although not nearly as clearly defined as the examples. Sox (a black and white) seems to have produced a smutty buckskin that is the same color as the pony pictured, but tested to be buckskin! I also wonder if Toffee might be smutty bay with her coloration and dapples.

Yes and my filly when clipped looks grulla not buckskin. Then she turns white over dark in winter. Each year her dam, a bay tobiano-possible sabino, gets more and more dark dappling in summer.

Funny you should mention clipping the buckskin because I started clipping our buckskin filly yesterday (foal of Toffee NOT Sox) and her hair is very dark underneath her light buckskin winter coat. I only clipped a bit on her neck though, and will wait to do the rest as it still might turn cold here.

Wow..those colors are amazimg!!!the reverse brindle and the bay AND chestnut horse...one photo did look photoshopped to me,but nevertheless...amazing...i never knew you could get wildly marked horses like that..thanks for sharing...!

I was told that is why Marbles is a brindle. Her sire is a smutty/sooty buckskin. Her dam was a red roan. Marbles got the sooty gene from her sire and it went crazy. Looking forward to see what she can produce. She is 3 this year and I am toying with breeding her to her sire this year/ (It was the suggestion of The University Of California Davis to do this)
