Hi

The vet just left, he couldn't believe the shape she was in, he scored her a 1 1/2 OUT OF 10 , we did weight tape and she only weights 459 lbs, should be 600-700 range. She also has a 2 out of 5 systolic heart murmur, thinks its from being under weight , and in such poor shape ,we hope when she gets fits it should go away .

He aged her at 2 1/2 yrs old, not the 4 yrs I was told, they had been using her all summer for pony rides, she only a baby, She should just now be broke to ride, Not giving pony rides

He wrote her as a starvation case, and said with this paper he gave me, if I go to SPCA, and give it to them., they will be charged. I am going to call them and tell them I want them to come right away and sign them over to me and if not, I will be forwarding this to the SPCA , I will use this to make them sign them over to me and then I may do it anyway.

The donkey he said was a baby too, she is only about 2 yrs old and was thin, gave her a 3 score and she should OK , with some good food & worming and feet are real bad, need alot of farrier work, I have call in my farrier, also she started locking up her back legs while he was here, said she has bilateral upward fixation, scores it about a 1, He said exercise should help her with that

I wanted to Thank Everyone for all your good words and offers of help ( THANKS LISA ) , I will keep updating about them .I will try to get more pictures tomorrow..JANE

Thank you for the pictures - what a sweet kind face on the little mare! I think that time, condition and exercise will help strengthen Laverne's back legs, bless her. Well done you - I'm sure they both appreciate your kindness and attention. Good luck with getting them both into your ownership.

Looking at Sweetie, I simply cannot understand how any parents could let their children take rides on a pony in that condition! What were they thinking of??

Hugs to you all.

I wonder the same thing !! I just made them a page on my website and will do updates on there to, its Hawk Hollow Farm

Jane,

I must have also missed your first post about these 2 rescues. How sad - what on earth is wrong with people that they can't care for their animals?

It looks like Sweetie has a kind eye - she is going to be so happy to have food, water and lots of love.

Laverne is just adorable - thank goodness you have found these precious animals, it will be great to see their progress under your care.

Hugs for both Sweetie and Laverne and a special hug for you!

I missed the first post too. Kudos to you for taking them in. You have to wonder what people were thinking!! Good luck with them.

Your vet must be a wonderful guy to stick his neck out on that paperwork for neglect. Not many vets would do that.
Thanks for taking them in.
I was thinking the same thing, that was really good of him.

Personally, I am undecided on what I would do after they have signed them over....maybe you could talk to animal control and see what would be likely to happen to the people.

If they would get an automatic fine, or possibly even have to pay some of the vet's bills, and be banned form keeping animals, I would go for it.

It's the idea of having to go through all the trouble of court, just to see them walk free on a technicality, that puts me off going for the jugular, these days!!

Yes, my vet is the greatest. He care about the animals more then the money, I have had him for 20 yrs, and told him he can never retire.

I found out they are going to court from the SPCA, in two weeks from when they visited there a few months ago, over all the big horses they had ,if I can get them to sign over, I will watch and see whats happening ,if they get off, then I may forward vet report & pic's to the SPCA. I really don't want to get dragged in all the legal crap, I just want to save them and don't want all the time going to court and watching nothing getting done, I will take care of them myself, and spread the word about them,so no one will let them have any of their animals...JANE

Also, I just had the dentist here and she said teeth were terrible, even as young as they are, they need real good floatings. They had probably never been done So now teeth are in better shape, should help with the weight going back on. She also gave me a statement in writing about how bad their mouth were..JANE

Have you gotten any feedback from these neglectful former owners (yes you can have them, no you cannot, go take a flying leap?) I can't see why they would give you any trouble about it, it's pretty obvious that they don't care about the animals themselves at all. If all they want is something to give pony rides on, they can find another poor animal cheaply enough, without the bother of trying to bring these two back up to scratch. If it were me, I'd "make nice" long enough to get them to sign the pony and donkey over, then I'd wash my hands of them.

Even if they don't make difficulties about the ownership issue, I'd get in touch with with the authorities as a form of CYA. There's always the risk that somebody could see these unfortunate creatures, and report you! You have the Vet and the dentist to back you up, but in the meantime, it could be a nuisance. It sounds like you have covered the bases pretty well, they ought to show visible improvement pretty quickly.

Every time I look at a picture of Sweetie, I can't decide whether I want to cry, or scream in outrage. My mind's eye fills out that pathetically thin frame, and what I see looks like a lovely Welsh pony. Doing that to any animal is horrible, criminal; but this almost amounts to sacrilege!!

Thanks so much for the new photos! She DOES look better, Jane! I agree- look at that sparkle in her eye now- she knows you love her and will care for her. She is a fighter and will make it just fine with your loving care.

I give you a word of caution? When you go talk to the former owner I would only take copies of the letters. I would also give the original letters to the authorities and ask that they copy them and give you the originals back. Those papers along with the bills and pictures are the only things that gives you any leverage with the former owners. If anything happened to those documents you would have no proof you didn't just take them. I mean, what happens this summer when the pony looks better and the kids want her back. I would file a complaint with the SPCA and animal control. Just my opinion.

Sorry I am so serious about this. But, if some of you remember the cat I rescued from a friend of mine. At least for her last 2 months she was able to remember that not all people were bad.

Well I tried to call the guys who had them, and they are not returning call. I left message and told them they need to sign them over to me and my vet saw them and is upset and wants me to turn this over to SPCA. I thought if I said that they would call and sign over, but they are playing games. We talked to someone that works with them, and he said they got my message and don't want to deal with is and they will just give me some money when they want back. They have no idea how much its going to cost to save them, I spent $350 in one week, and this is only the beginning. There is going to be alot of feed & farrier work ahead

So my husband tried calling them and they let go to voice mail again and he left message, that they are to call us today if not, that we will do what we have to. So if I don't hear from them today, tomorrow I will be calling the SPCA Monday morning and talking to the leader there, who does the investigations ,he is former equine vet and he doesn't back done, He is the one going after them for the big horses ,so he will really be interested in this and we know where the other horses they had are, my husband delivered them for them and those people can tell the SPCA how bad of shape they were in . I think they figure if the animals are gone that the SPCA can do anything.

These jerks just don't get it and playing games is going to cost them real big. I just hope we can keep them and the SPCA wont take them, but I rather see that them getting their hand in them again. I will keep update on this..JANE

I already made copies and my vet has his copy on file at office.
