Do you give your own vaccines or do you have avet do it? Is the amount given different from a full sized horse? I usually give my full sized horses their vaccines. Do miniatures get the same dosage?

We do our own and yes, the dosage is the same.

The only time there's a difference in dosages with meds is when it's being given by weight.....ie, wormers and pain meds.

PS: Was just thinking about your question in regard to giving your horses vaccines yourself.... We only give our own because of the number of horses we own and we were fortunate to have a vet who showed us how to do it.

If you only have a few horses, it may be best to just have your vet give the shots and then if you are interested you could have him or her show you.

Horses of ALL sizes from mini to draft get the same amount of vaccine.

I usually give my own shots (well actually I am needle phobic, so I find someone at the barn to "harpoon" them for me) because it IS more economical, even if you just have one or two! However, there CAN be SERIOUS risks with giving your own vaccinations so unless you are experienced and have had your licensed veterinarian show you, I'd probably advise against it.

I was lazy this month and had my vet vaccinate my horses when he was here to do some dental work. I will probably regret it when I get the bill, but I do have peace of mind. Horses are expensive no matter how you slice it.

I've been giving my own vaccines for years and years. Our vet practice really expects us to be able to do so.

Also, I do our dog's shots, too, except for rabies

(I do give rabies shots to the horses, though).

We never give vaccines to any of the animals, or us.

I am with Jill, we give them to all the horses, and dogs and cats. One thing we did start to do is purchase the shots from th instead of mail order or TSC and mills. Our vet is always concerned that the teperature will not be correct otherwise and the vaccine will not be as effective.

We always do our own vaccines I keep my vet busy enough without him doing them

I do give the same amount but honestly have never understood why my small dogs (chi's) do not get the same amount of vaccine as a large dog- my vets have always felt that was overkill on the small dogs especially the pups

Since you give your big horses vaccines I am sure you will have no problem with the minis

We give our own vaccines. If we had the vet do it, it would be at least $77 per horse and with 30 horses it's more cost efficient just to order from an online vendor to get the shots in bulk, draw them ourselves, and do the injections ourselves.

Our vet has intern vets that come each year to learn. We buy the vaccines and the vet charges us $5.00 per horse and has the interns learn. It much faster with several people and if any problems the vet is here. I have given shots when needed.

I personally don't give yearly shots besides tetnus, west nile and rabies. I go to tractor supply and purchase them myself. I am a current Veterinary Assistant so giving shots is no biggie for me and is part of my job, therefore my vet expects for me to be able to give my own animals shots.

I have been saving a BUNCH of money doing it this way, but honestly, people have a professional train you in the correct way to administer shots because with some drugs it's intraveineous (in the vein), intramuscular (in the muscles), or subcutaneous (just beneath the skin). Makes a big difference depending on which drug(s) you are using.

I give my own, too.

To Katie: I really don't think (I hope not at least

) that people are blindly administering vaccines without knowing what they're doing. Most (some are SC) vaccines are given IM. They will also have instructions on them. I have never given meds, tranquilizers etc. IV, so if anyone needs something like that the vet comes out. The main concern is knowing how to properly inject IM (where, how, etc.).

I have the vet come for tetanus and rabies. I didn't know we could purchase them ourselves in Ontario and administer.

Where do you buy tetanus and rabies Matt?
