Something that surprised me when reading about Botulism on the CDC website.

One of the most common ways for people of all ages to become infected with Botulism is by eating things that have been stored in dented cans. :new_shocked:

My mother always told me to get cans that aren't dented, she always thought there could be a problem, she won't even get dented dog food cans.

I personally wouldn't try to save a few cents by buying a dented can, its just not worth it.

Yes, that is true.

I learned that when I was sent to a food safety class when I worked as an manager at a Taco Bell years ago. The biggest problem area is where the can seam is and the lid areas.

Yep!!! I won't buy a dented can of food...not even dog or cat food. I'm even picky about boxes...if a cereal box is dented or looks like it was pushed in, I won't buy it...especially if it's the last item on the shelf of that particular thing.

Same here...Im very picky that way!! I also wont buy a box of something if it has been sliced when they were opening the original shipping box it was in...Gotta be careful these days with not just diseases and such, but nuts that decide to stick something IN the box!

This is sort of a different subject, but just recently I went to the Dr. for a yearly check up and mentioned to him that I was having acid reflux for the first time in my life ever. He did a blood test and found that I have a bacteria called H Pylori. It comes from Contaminated Food and can pass from person to person. Anyway it can be irradicated with heavy duty antibiotics for 14 days. The meds are very expensive. I have BCBS and the copay was $50.00. Anyway for everyones information if you start having stomach burning, acid reflux and stomach pain get checked for this. It can lead to ulcers if untreated.

My mom also always made me check the top and bottom of the can to see if it bugled out. If it had a dent or was bulged up at the ends she would take them up to the cashier and show them, hehe. I know they probably just stuck them back on the shelves but she was sure that they always destroyed those cans and we were saving lives by not leaving them on the shelves.

The older I get the pickier I get about my food, I rarely eat anything from cans any more at all....

I have always been taught to do this, and I know I always will! Your right, its just not worth the risk.
