Well I am very sad that the manufacturers of the Horses In Black turnout blankets are going out of business.

Do you have any recommendations for good WATERPROOF turnout blankets? Good quality?

Those Polar Express blankets you can buy from Chimacum Tack and other places are quite nicely waterproofed. I share your wet winters and you know how Kody loves to stand out in them and I can say that after being used and completely soaked for three years his are still shedding water and staying dry on the inside. I'm also looking into the Glover turnout blanket line as those include a wither cap which makes more sense to me than a cutback wither for a horse out in the rain. I love my Kensington too but I only have the heaviest weight in that brand and it only gets used when Kody's clipped and it suddenly freezes.

Hi,

I have a Weatherbeeta Foal Blanket that fits my mini shetland mare just fine. The only problem is that it has the cut back neck, so her shoulders do get a little wet in the rain. If only they made Rambo blankets small enough for minis.

: Triple L also has a good line of blankets avaliable.

I have two Polar Express blankets that I bought from Lisa at The Horse Blanket. Light weight, breathable, and waterproof. Just love them.

Also have a Weatherbeeta (mini/pony size 48") that I bought from Country Supply. Also light weight, breathable, and waterproof.

Both have buckle fronts and leg straps. They stay in place even when they roll.

Two of my Polar blankets are not waterproof, as they are supposed to be...but I do have a third...that is. The two that "leak", I have simply added (taped) a strip of plastic down the back, and it works well enough. I seldom blanket anyways...but it is nice to have something when you do need a bit extra.

I recently bought a med. weight turnout blanket, and a breathable weatherproof turnout sheet from a place called "Just for Ponies", for my 38" mare. One is a Weatherbeeta, the other is a Saxon-both were on sale, in only the size I needed(a 48"), so I got a good deal! I haven't needed the blanket yet, used the sheet during the show at our State Fair, and it was fine--neither has 'stood the test of time' yet, but they appear to be quality items.ADDED: one or both have no back seam, so that'll help in being waterproof!

Not sure they carry anything smaller than a 48", but if you have B sized minis, you might want to take a look. They have a website;believe it's under the name above--they are on the east coast.

I have 3 Polar Express waterproof blankets and they have been doing well for 3 winters. Rather impressed with them. Bought from Mini Express.

Polar Express also makes sheets that are not waterproof.

I figure NW Oregon is a true testing ground to what is waterproof or not. Have proven over the years with the bigger sizes what really isn't waterproof.

These two come in Rainsheets or Blankets are "horse's in Black" and Club Dry... made by the same company. You have to watch quality control with the leg straps but they are one tough sheet/blankets.

Down side is they are spendy.

Other than those... I really haven't found other sheets in the sizes for the mini's that have been both tough/long living, fit well and totally waterproof and being waterproof sheets that can breath.

Margo,, Just for ponies, owners are just wonderful to deal with! I buy all my larger pony sheets from them.

:bgrin Yeah...like mine. The two that I have that leak, only leak in a few spots over the back. there are no seams there, but the water-proofing just isn't there...it is "patchy". they are "waterproof" blankets though. I probably should have sent them back...but once the receips and packaging is thrown away...there usually isn't much you can do but grin-n-bear it". Aside from this wee problem, which I have fixed...they are wonderful little blankets, and I particularly like how they fit, and the gussets at the shoulders, which enable the horses to move so much better than most blankets.

I have had wonderful luck buying them from Mini Express.... if you deside to buy another one Sue, to give it a try, I would recommend them.

I am very pleased with how they fit the mini's,, one of the only blankets that work they way I want them too.

Just wish I can get the waterproof sheets,,, those are rather hard to find and not for sale very often.

My Donkey will undo the sheets and blankets that have just velco straps

: and I find the ones with the belly bands and big snap thingys on the side of the sheets/blankets tend to pull them around and my mini's do not like it.

Is very hard finding a truelly waterproof sheet/blanket for mini's that is made well and fit like they do on their big counterparts.

I have the polar blankets and they are very nice. I heard that the company that sells Horse's In Black was going out of business, I got two HIB scrims on sale because the company was liquidating. I am looking for good sheets. I hate the ones I have now and I haven't been able to find any that I like in mini size. Anyone know where I can find a waterproof sheet with buckle sircingles instead of velcro?

Courtney

P.S. I love Just For Ponies, they have lots of WELL made mini things, like halters, bridles, bits, blankets that the mini stores just don't have.

I have a Kensington Roustabout from Ozark Mountain, and it is WONDERFUL! Truly waterproof and very warm. And, it stays put! www.minitack.com
