We have a Great Horned Owl Pair - Pic(s)

Just thought I'd share our Great Horned Owls. We knew they were around as we've been seeing them out in our back property and hearing them. I knew they were roosting in our yard during the day somewhere so yesterday I went looking........Found what we think is the male, because he looks bigger. (The red eye is from using the flash with some of the photos.)

Had a GH Owl fly over my head a few weeks ago while riding. I can hear they are around but haven't been able to see them close yet.

Do you feel so lucky for 4 or 5 hours a night when you hear the darlings hooting non-stop?!

: We have a couple around here, and it seems like they are right outside my bedroom window when they hoot. :new_shocked: not funny at all.......we got used to turning on the radio for sound, it's that bad. Too funny. God, I love Mother Nature!

: I have to admit, when I saw the red eyes, I figured thats what they really look like, because I know they torture me on purpose, hehehe.

I LOVE owls! We have Saw-Whets, Great Horneds, Barn Owls, Spotted Owls, and I'm sure several other types. I love listening to the one that sounds like the backup alarm on a big rig. But the best is the hooting of a Great Horned owl.

You are very lucky to have them gracing your surroundings.

Oh my, my, my myyyyyy!!!!! What a beauty!!! How did you get so close to get that picture? One night in a snowstorm we had a HUGE beautiful snow owl....which is a ? owl only changes his feathers due to the snow from what I've hear (?). Anyway, just me opening up the curtain a little bit moved him enough to fly away...he was a site while I was able to enjoy him at 2:00 in the morning tho!

He actually was probably about 12 feet UP from us, but our camera has a zoom lens, which helps.

Last year we had these guys as well, but they weren't being so obvious......probably because we had a BARN OWL roosting in the same Willow Tree instead! We got a couple of photos of the Barn Owl too, but they didn't turn out very well.

Nope......no chickens. I'm just enjoying all the wildlife showing up. Just got a new group of ducks AND a Blue Heron on our pond(s) yesterday too!

Aren't great horned owls cool? I raised one from a fuzzy baby until it was about 5 months old with about a 5 foot wingspan and was swooping down on my schnauzer. I had a temporary permit from fish and game and it wasn't humanized so my dog wasn't very happy about having it around.

Make sure the cats are locked up at night too. They don't hesitate to pick them off. I lost a cat that was playing hard to catch to an owl one night.
