I know i have asked before BUT i want to do my own website for either free or not a high price. I want one that will turn out good and easy to do. Please help me decide what and how to go about creating one.

THANKS!

Debby designed my template but it was done with Homestead. They have lots of free templates that you can use. There is a small monthly fee depending of what service you want. They have free technical support, but if you can use photoshop and powerpoint this site will be easy. http://www.homestead.com/?s_cid=M130229C&pd=t

The best 'cheap' way is by using www.freewebs.com

Please check out mine-i purchase the premium package to get better templates and more space. I believe I pay $40 per year for that and something like $20 for my domain name. Very cheap and I can edit and add whenever I want without having to pay someone to do it. With freewebs you can also use pictures directly from photobucket and it will not take up any space which is something I really love.

Mine is hosted by Earthlink for about $20/mo. I have a few domain names that route to the same site (www.whinny4me.com, www.whinnyforme.com, www.showminis.com). I do the design and maintenance myself

I use webs.com, really cheap and quite easy to use. I am just getting mine underway but it is going quite fast.

I have my own host. I went with fatcow.com as I wanted my own barn name and no other names in the address, so my website is weebiscuit.com and I love having it! I think I pay around $100 per year, and I have unlimited space. I could probably upload all the pictures in my computer pictures folder! I also designed it and put it up myself, and love the flexibility of doing this. I have unlimited bandwidth so I could upload stuff all day long every day and it wouldn't be a problem.

I also like having my own server because I have a lot of "hidden" pages on the site. What I mean is that you won't find a link to them on my website, but I've uploaded all sorts of things, and then send the URL out to certain people. Like, one page is of my granddaughter and me riding our horses last year. Just a ton of pics. I'll upload pages like that and the url will still be www.weebiscuit.com but the full address might be something like www.weebiscuit.com/mygdridingwithme.htm and I can just email that url out to family members so they can see the pics nice and big! (BTW..... that example I gave is fake, LOL)

Or sometimes I have someone interested in a horse and they want pics of the teeth and rear end and maybe pics of our hay feeders or stalls... stuff I wouldn't normally put on my website. Instead of emailing them the pics, they can just scroll down through them on a web page, which I think shows the pics larger and to a better advantage.

fatcow's tech support is also phenominal, and I can always reach them by phone for free support if I need it.

On the webs.com, what is the difference between choosing the site as a 'personal' or a 'business' one? I dont need all these apps, or a blog, dont sell stuff on line like clothing, or a lot of the stuff they have showing on there but I dont see anywhere to compare a personal site with a business type site.

I have just recently started doing my own website. I am having a lot of fun with it too. I had a web person and she still hosts my site, I seem to be able to have what I want on it, my web address has only my farm name in it. I bought the program for my site, actually got it on sale LOL yes even web programs. I love it and its pretty easy to use. Its called Web Easy. I have just learned how to put on a counter and a Guest Book, it was pretty easy. I like my new site, and I update it often. We have a show next weekend, look out everyone, I have a place to post those funny pictures now.

Ok folks, well I took the big plunge and signed up on the webs.com It is still a work in progress and now I just had this horrible flash of light that told me when I am done I am going to have to up date every single place my website is on.... omg, that might be a nightmare cause I have no idea where all it's listed. Been the same for about 15 years. Yikes.

Will post the site when I am done (hopefully later this week) and you all can pick it apart for me!

Bandwidth is an important issue with web sites. Be sure whatever you choose allows enough. I use a very economical plan with a company called hostroute.com for the Oklahoma Button club website that I maintain. It is only $15 a year but I have to limit the site to 15 pages or less. (The thumbnails hosted by the site don't add up to much, so I need to plan to use more of those on future pages.) We've been using that company for about 12 years, for our personal domain and now the button club.

I just use the old '97 Publisher and it is working fine. A newer program would probably be better, but I didn't see any sense in investing in one when the old one is doing the job. Besides, I'd have to learn a new program

The old Publisher doesn't do animation or sound. I think it would be nice to have some pretty music while the pages are loading. However, there are many folks who still have slow connections that dont' appreciate a "busy" site, so I probably wouldn't put music on anyway.

Upgrading to unlimited bandwidth raises the price considerably. We don't have a Cart or use the host email so I decided it wasn't worth the money to upgrade the bandwidth. We just use gmail for the email contact. I don't have a guest book, but the Control Panel gives me a good idea of how many hits the site gets, which pages are viewed most often, and also what search engines are used. Pretty cool to monitor that!

A web guru suggested Hostgator. He says they have very good support and reliability. If the host company you choose has different plans, you could start small and then upgrade if it turns out you need more space.

I wish I had chosen a different name for the button club domain, but it is too much trouble to change it now. So choose your domain name carefully!
