Which ones have you used and which do you like? I am wondering if I am adding fat that way I should quite the BOSS?

I have a very hard keeper and while he looks better this year compared to last he is still thin and really not even able to eat the amount of feed he is getting so I need to do something different especially with breeding season coming up even though we only plan on breeding a couple.

His teeth are fine, he has been de-wormed fecal count done he is fine (he is just well if it was a woman I would say blessed with a very high metabolisim)

He currently gets 3-4 lbs of hay, 9 cups of soaked beet pulp(1 cup of dry = 6cups soaked 1 cup dry weighs 1/2 lb), 5 cups of mare/foal feed (1 cup = 1/3 lb) this is really way more feed then even my heavy in foal or nursing mares get.

I have heard many have great results with these weight gain products and wondering which you liked best and why

I'm currently feeding Natures Essentials Amplify by Purina with Born to Win and Alfalfa cubes to the rescue pony I have and I've seen a remarkable difference in the 3 weeks he's been on it. Pony is approx 40yrs old, had his teeth done he's looking awesome now. I can get you the information off the tub if you'd like. I think its a 30lb tub and I paid $24 for it. I chose this route rather than seek some other product and drive 15 miles to the other feed store. My old man gets 12oz of Born to win, 12 oz steam rolled oats, and 1 3qt scoop of alfalfa cubes with 12 oz of the Amplify. I can't wait to see him in summer coat. I can finally feel fat over ribs, he came to me from the local rescue, a walking skeleton in November. the rescue was feeding him 1 full 3qt scoop of Sr and he wasn't eating it so since my others were on the Born to win I decided to try it and this is working for my old man.

we have had a hard keeper on opur farm, and the products we have seen are:Cool Calories, basically pure fats... and I have been told to try mega blud...these are two methods we have been recomended, although didnt actually try mega blud, but told it worked really well, and the horse didnt like the cool caloreis, but if mixed into grains well they may take to it, but good luck, hard keepers are definetly interesting ahha

body builder! I cant say enough good things about this product. I was lucky that a trainer shared it with me. you can buy it online at jeffers. It is exspensive about 75.00 per bottle but you dont use very much.

All the other weight gainers i tried the horses hated and wouldnt touch. they LOVE this stuff. And you would not believe the shine and bloom it puts on them. 1 bottle lasts about 2 months depending on the size of the horse. You do have to watch carefully and stop when they are about right or you could end up on the heavy side.

Send him over to me Leese.

All I have to do is look at him and I promise he'll gain 100 pounds.

I can prove it too cause every horse I ever had does it!

Maybe it's my lush pastures, but I think it's my mountain air~

I just started a young gelding on Body Builder,,,,,,,,,he does like it,,,,,but too early to notice changes. I'll let you know.

carolyn im so glad you got some. within 2 weeks we could see a big difference both in body condition and activity level. By the end of a month the results were truly amazing. Sure smells like cake batter doesnt it? lol

The best way we have found to put weight on a hard keeper is to supplement their diet with Calf Manna and pure Alfalfa Hay or Alfalfa pellets! This also boosts their energy level! I've tried several of the weight gain products, but found this to work best for us!

My favorite is the Platform Weight Formula!

I tried it last year for the first time..........with a Cushing's mare that was close to being put to sleep because she had gotten downright emaciated from the summer heat.

2 months on the stuff and she was back to normal weight. It's a white granule that smells a bit like apples, she ate it fine and she's a very finicky eater. I liked it mostly because there were no other added ingredients, it was pure fat with omegas.

I used to use weight builder frequently, but never saw many results. Also tried Fat Cat, which worked but also added way too much extra energy that my horses didn't need.

: I've taken horses that people swore were extremely hard keepers (and were very thin) and in no time had them pleasingly plump. :bgrin

Just don't send any to me that need to DIET-- that I don't do nearly so well, lol!
