small herd

 Wow, seems like a ton of mini people are going into the AMHR/ASPC size horses. Granted, they are gorgeous but I have always loved the tiny ones that are like 26-29". I take the term "miniature" literally and by that meaning the the smallest most perfect horse should be winner at the shows in their category (please don't flame me, JMO). What is going to happen to the tiny ones ? They are just as important to the breed as the taller minis, I think.

the tiny ones arent going anywhere!! i still have my little ones. Also keep in mind the amhr/aspc cant show in amha shows if they are over 34" this is whats so great about miniatures is they come in a size to make everyone happy

There's lots of breeders who breed for tinys! They're not going anywhere and the tiny ones just keep getting better! :aktion033:

Nobody out here in my pasture is over 32" , and all but one mare are under 30". (only got four total) :bgrin I love the little ones!!!

What is ASPC? I have seen it pop up every where but no idea what it is. I know it is a registration but what are the requirements for this?

The little ones are still around. I prefer the smaller ones, under 30'.

Anything any bigger wouldn't fit in the back of my SUV. :new_shocked:

Just a little friendly reminder that AMHR doesn't necessarily mean big...............they come in tiny sizes too!

ASPC = American Shetland Pony Club

A lot of people are breeding shetlands down to miniature size and double registering them. They tend to be taller B size (over 34") minis although there are quite a few A size (under 34") as well.

Lots of tiny ones here too. :bgrin My stallions are 30" and 32", and most of the horses that have shown well for us are under 30".

I have about half and half.

In my opinion the taller horses are gaining popularity, but I have never thought the smaller ones would go away. I think they too will remain popular. Smaller, taller and all in between,,,,,,,makes the horse world go around!!!!

I think Timmy is going to be a tiny......

If he is, my smaller 30" girls are in luck! :aktion033: :aktion033: :aktion033:

Hi Tia,

I think lots of us still love the tiny ones best. :)

The Smallest Horse Group has lots of members! And we always have a really nice ad in the World and the Journal! :)

And it is great for the tiny lovers, that for a relatively big farm (over 200 minis) ....... Tony at Little America still loves the tiny ones best too!! :))

I don't think I will ever have a "B" sized mini. I like the tinys. Tallest one here is 34"!

I would like to see the under 30" minis gain more popularity. I know there are small minis in the AMHR also. I guess I was thinking I have seen more people go from AMHA to AMHR and then on to ASPC, and not owning the smaller ones at all anymore.

Yes, the small minis are getting better and I am real excited to see that.

We breed a lot of horses under 30" and we have not had any trouble selling them. Our main stallion is registered with AMHA and AMHR and he is 29" tall and he was the 1999 AMHR National Grand Champion Junior Stallion. He has never had any foals over 34" tall. We have a few tall AMHR mares just so that we have different sizes as well as the small ones. I love the smaller ones though. All of our stallions are double registered and a lot of our mares are too. There are a lot of people out there still breeding small minis and are doing good.

I've showed or help shown in AMHR for past 2 years and yes there are minis there that are bigger sized, but the lil ones are still around and porpular. I'll be showing under my own farm name this year with my 2 (which both are under 32") and can' wait,,ya gotta love the tiny ones

I think it is mean to make minis to small. All there guts and insides wont fit inside them and the will bedeformed. Horses were naturally big for a reason and people that bred minis were ok but making them to small is mean.

New Image,

That is not a stupid question. :)

Most if not ALL minis have a huge amount of Shetland blood. Many of the real greats of the breed, such as Rowdy and Buckeroo have close Shetland blood in their ancestry.

And yes there are some that are registered all three ways.

Back 17 years ago I knew of one that was even then registered with all three registries.

laura at ten L training has a triple registered stallion that knocks my socks off!! hes amha/amhr/aspc

I believe getitia also has one. They are rare but they are out there. Used to be a lot of amha horses had shetland papers but a lot of old breeders threw away the shetland papers as they wanted to have them only registered miniature. Such a shame!

I am always going to stick with the 30" and under whether they are popular or not

: It's good to see that many others feel the same.

Thanks Mary Lou
