What are your thoughts on thimbles?

What do you feel are the pros and cons on thimbles.

I would also like to know what the difference in using thimbles versus shaft stops on the cart. I know thimbles aren't for replacing breeching, but using them in obstacle classes? Is there an advantage to thimbles if you have shaft stops?

they are better than nothing, and I would use both stops and thimbles...never hurts to have a "back up". My preference is for breeching, but in roadster, where breeching isn't allowed, thimbles and stops are what I have used.
