We had a foal born yesterday afternoon to a black dam and silver bay sire. The baby is dark, but not sure if he will be bay or black. What color are black foals at birth? Am I right that they aren't black, but darken with age?

Black foals are born noir ( french) schwarz ( german)

Hope this helps without to mention b.......

I have three. Mine were all born smokey or greyishy but I never had one born coal black. They changed after the first clipping and are true blacks

So this little guy will probably be bay? He is alot lighter than the black babies.

IM SO GLAD TO SEE THESE PICTURES...my mare has just had her very first foal, and she is black, and the sire is grey and i was certain that i would get a grey foal,

and i actually got a Black colt with white spots on his rump, its so weird as i always always wanted a black colt with a white spotty rump lol, im so over the moon,i couldnt describe the colour other than to say it looked like a donkey colour,

congratulations on your foal..... :aktion033:

gosh he looks so like my boy

: do they also have a black dorsal stripe running from head to tip of the tail?

Our black babies start out more of a charcoal gray and then darken. We used to have a blue pinto mare with the graying gene and some of her babies would be born pitch BLACK. It was those we knew would probaby gray out.

Yes they often have big fake dorsals, they wil disappear after shedding or cliping, it´s a natural camouflage thing.

Alot of black foals are mistakenly registerred as dun.

Well..I have only had two blacks born, and they were born BLACK..but, they both turned out to be Appaloosa! LOL!! :bgrin

this is the colt

and this is his full sister..but she did turn a deep red at a few days old so I registered her as a chestnut  . Now, with her being 3 yrs, I will have to change that as she truely is black.
