Am I ticked or what...I just spent 15 minutes with photos and the whole caboodle, answering these last questions...and it "disappeared". Too peed-off to do it again. Too late in the day. COMPUTERS!! :ugh: :ugh:

Anyways, long story short. This picture is of an eight year old mare, who was absolutely solid bay dun. All she had to start with were the two characteristics that I see in your colt. Now, as a 13 year old, she is a creamy beige all over, with black points. So yes, I certainly do think that your colt can colour out as an appy varnish roan. Only time will tell.

Awww C'mon Sue you can't tease me like that!

I would love to see the photos you had ready to post and the answers to my questions!!

Would you mind explaining "appy varnish roan" a bit better for me please! :stupid:

When I went out to Cobalt this afternoon, I had a really good look at his coat. What I found, were a LOT of white hairs amongst his black hair, but mainly over his back half. He had a few white hairs on his head, neck etc, but the majority are on his back half.

:bgrin

Unfortunately Sabino can do that too, and I still think it more likely- although I do not rule out the possibility of Varnish roan.

Varnish is almost the most minimal expression of Appy- you get the characteristics- usually- ie striped hooves, white rings (sclera) round the eyes, speckled skin and a roan like lightening of the coat- Sue's mare is an excellent example except that the colouring shows less on a lighter base such as Bay Dun or Grulla- a solid Black will show it less as Black suppresses the expression of patterns and Red encourages it (usually, this is not a set in stone rule).

It will be interesting to see how your colt developed but, as I said, I would not hold your breath.

Is there any way you can post pictures of his sire and dam (you need permission from the owner)

Hi Jane

I have sent a e-mail to current owner of Cobalt's Sire to gain permission. Will keep you posted.

Jane did you get my PM?

Thanks
