Ok this will be my first long trip in my new trailer. I have been pulling a 2 (big) horse trailer now I bought a three (big) horse trailer. I was hauling three or less horse/s lose in the 2 horse but now I don't know what to do in the bigger trailer. We will be going 4 to 4 and a half hours. Should I tie or not tie. I have nothing to seperate them with.

So what would you do?

Do they get along well? If not, then you definitely need to tie them to keep them apart. If they are good buddies then I would make sure there is plenty of hay and leave them loose. However, there are probably an equal amount of people who advocate tying and not tying.

I'm curious to hear responses. I would only tie a horse if they were in snug, secure, standing-stall type compartment in a trailer, with a chest bar etc. And with a bar/wall behind them. That's how I always travelled with big horses. I don't know what's safer with minis: letting them be loose (what I do) or tying them, but with no supports on their sides or back end etc. Hmmmm.. Of course, if you have mini standing-stall type compartments, like I mentioned above, that's the safest way to travel IMO.

After I opened the trailer to find my stallion almost hanging himself and my mare standing on top of him......we never tie the minis.

We have a 4 horse (big) stock trailer with one divider that separates the front half from the back half. If we just have a couple we put them in the front. If we have a bunch we separate them half and half. I also have a friend that had a mini hang itself in a trailer.

Once you start moving the horses will just worry about keeping there balance. I don't think you should have trouble. But, that's just my opinion

They get along OK. Not like fight to the death or anything. My 2 Geldings "Play". I think if they had Plenty of hay the would be fine.

Scary!!!!!!!! That really makes me not want to tie!

I would not haul horses untied, unless it's a foal. Our ties are all at mini height.

We've hauled tied and untied. We hauled a pregnant mare and three yearlings untied from Texas to CA, they did great. The only time I do tie in all honesty is if it's mares/stallion or two stallions. We've made temporary dividers using 3'-4' walk thru gates with grating on them. It wasn't pretty but made Mini proof stalls. My trailer right now is being modified with Mini dividers.

We also did a temporary pen for a friend that was hauling mares/stallion in her trailer, by using an 8' gate, tied off for the stallion in the front and mares in back loose. Worked wonderfully.

We also haul in our Ford Van (Econoline with a divider between humans/animals) and if it's horses that are new to the experience we tie them, ones that are use to it, we've left loose.

Once you're driving they won't fight, except maybe when you stop.

If they are all in the same open area, I would either tie all or not tie any. If they are used to being together I would leave them untied.

Same here. I would definitely see if there is any way you can put tie-rings low enough they can be tied.

It is interesting the range of responses you get with this question! I hauled my minis in my new trailer for the first time yesterday. It is a 16' stock trailer with a full divider in the middle that gives you a front and back area. My horses are all geldings, but the bigger boys tend to pick on my smaller guy, so I tied him up in the front part and closed the divider and then tied my other two in the back.

They all seemed to ride fine, but when we got to the show, our little guy had shavings all over his blanket, so I was worried that he had gone down at some point. So on the way home, I left him loose, but I still tied the other two in the rear half. They all rode really well still, but my little guy seemed much happier when we got home. (When I say little I mean in height as he is 4 years old - so not too young).

My biggest fear is somehow a door is going to pop open. I guess I feel like if they are tied they would be safer if, God forbid, this ever did happen. But things could still go bad even if they are tied. I would like to have a mini trailer, but I still have big horses, so the stock trailer gives me the most versatility. It pulls great and they seemed very comfortable. I guess I am still up in the air, too, on the whole "to tie or not to tie."
