We have our fingers crossed for our 1983 Model mare for a 2010 foal -- needless to say I will be out in the barn 24//7

I do not think I would breed a mare after 20. However, I think it is a case by case thing. Some mares can handle it and others can not.

The old broodmare thread got me to wondering. My old lady is 9 this year.

I had one that foaled at 25! It was actually an accident! She loved babies and was a wonderful babysitter in her elderly years at weaning time after that.

My mare Taffy was just purchased and is coming here Saturday and was aleady bred before purchase and has been having foals every other year just fine. She is in excellent condition and you would never know shes 26 unless you were told!

Cleo had her "last" foal at age 26. She was in exellent shape, frisky, kept in good weight, but that pregnancy did take more out of her than her previous ones had, and the foal was upsidedown for delivery -- Cleo, being the wonderful mare that she is, worked with me during that delivery and gave me a beautiful filly. So, for ME, that was her last foal - if she had her way, she would be pregnant again - she looks great, doesn't have a grey hair on her and pretty much runs the show - she is 28!

For those who don't know who "Cleo" is, she is the dam of World/National GRAND Champions: Mountain Meadows American Express, Mountain Meadows Playboy and Mountain Meadows Summer Rose as well as many other beautfiul horses - all from different sires - Cleo stamps her foals with her elegance, long slender neck and unbelievable movement - she is a treasure whom I love very much

My great grandmother had a mare, ARC Bunny Hop, who foaled a gorgeous colt at the age of 30. Yes, it was a complete accident. She did just fine, foaled on her own, never had a problem with her weight through the whole thing. We usually stop breeding our mares at age 20...they deserve it

The oldest I know of personally belonged to a friend of mine and she foaled at 27, and had been foaling consistently, almost every year. She loved babies and was a good mother. Her owner went out of business and I'm not sure who got the mare. Don't know if she foaled after that or not.

That's not old at all. That's even before her prime

9 is the equivalent to, say, 18 or 20 in human years.

I was thinking of the same mare Songcatcher! I remember her, I met her back then. She did love the babies! If I remember right, she was in foal at age 27 when she went to her new home.

Royal Pony Farm's now deceased mare Brook's Golden Kathy's Lassie foaled her last foal at the age of 32. I believe she was 41 when she passed away.

Ohhh Lewella, I would love to think some of my mares would live that long with my care!
