What is the oldest mare that has foaled, that you know of?
The old broodmare thread got me to wondering. My old lady is 9 this year.I do not think I would breed a mare after 20. However, I think it is a case by case thing. Some mares can handle it and others can not.
Cleo had her "last" foal at age 26. She was in exellent shape, frisky, kept in good weight, but that pregnancy did take more out of her than her previous ones had, and the foal was upsidedown for delivery -- Cleo, being the wonderful mare that she is, worked with me during that delivery and gave me a beautiful filly. So, for ME, that was her last foal - if she had her way, she would be pregnant again - she looks great, doesn't have a grey hair on her and pretty much runs the show - she is 28!
For those who don't know who "Cleo" is, she is the dam of World/National GRAND Champions: Mountain Meadows American Express, Mountain Meadows Playboy and Mountain Meadows Summer Rose as well as many other beautfiul horses - all from different sires - Cleo stamps her foals with her elegance, long slender neck and unbelievable movement - she is a treasure whom I love very much
