My Stallion turned 3 in 2010. Last year I found a spot on his leg just as he was going into his winter coat. This is what it looked like when I clipped the spot.

In the previous 2 summers he clipped out just a flat mouse brown or Sliver Black. This is what he clipped out to this past summer.

These tiny spots are all over him. What would you say is going on? His mother now 6 gets more white spots every year. This was the year she foaled.

She is very dappled. However, She is getting more and more , larger spots every year.

I am no expert...mom looks like a typical silver dapple...your boy looks like he is getting snowflakes. I had a mare I bought who was solid grulla with mottling only..when she turned 7 she shed out covered in snowflakes...so...you never know with these appys what/when you will get spots!

edited to add...my solid silver dapple mare has some white spots this year also, but she has no appy in her background and it is just her coloring changing I guess...she still has her dapples but also has small white spots along with them...color will drive you crazy...

I agree that the dam looks like a normal silver dapple to me. And yes, I would say the colt is doing the same, or they could even be 'bird catcher' spots. If they do not have Appy breeding behind them, and also have the characteristics like white sclera, mottling, etc... they cannot be Appaloosa regardless of how many spots show in their coat. Do you have any close ups of their faces?

here is a somewhat unflattering picture of my silver dapple mare I was talking about ..you can see her white spots on her back leg...she has gotten many more but is no way an appy..just her coloring...silver dapples are fun..she goes from almost black to brown to silver..dapples.no dapples....crazy

Her colt is by Woodstock North's Who's Appy now and his dam is out of a mare with characteristics but no pattern.

I will try to take some pictures of both mare's and colts head tomorrow. Both have very heavy appy characteristics. I will also snap a shot of mares "new" big spot on her butt.
