One of my Great Danes needed a break at 3am today. As we walked down the driveway next to my narrow strip of woods, a LOUD sound started and got louder and louder as we walked. We quickly turned around and retreated.

It was like two sounds in one... could it have been two animals?

It sounded almost(but not quite) like a cat in heat screaming, but louder and deeper than I have ever heard, and had really super loud CLICKING or chattering noises within the screaming too.

It didn't start until we got close to whatever it was. It was weird and a bit scarey. It certainly did not run from us!

Anyone have any ideas?

In the past we have seen Foxes but not lately. I have heard that there is a new group of coyotes in our township. Of course there are lots of deer, skunk, raccoons, possums.

I was wondering if badgers live in New Jersey?

Thanks!

Robin

coon or fox would be my guess... but hard telling without hearing it!

That time of the morning, could be an Owl or Coon?

You might want to check one of these sites for sound of a "fisher cat" to see if that is what it is?

About a year ago I was outside by my treeline waiting for my dog to go potty. She loves being outside in the wee hours of the morning......I KNOW NOT WHY!!!

Well as I sat there waiting for her something close inside the woods made a sound as you described...minus the clacking. Talk about being freaked out!!! I hightailed it inside and she stood out there checking things out...brave girl that she is..

. THAT sound made me quake in my boots. To this day I don't know exactly what it was. My first thought was a cat...but it was long, dragged out and creepy. Did'nt sound anything like the Fisher Cat, nor the fox on those You Tube sites. Someone said might have been the Jersey Devil and that creeped me out even more!

When I was in North Carolina I asked my neighbor what the awful high pitch ringing sound was. He said they were bugs in the trees. He called them Locusts!!!!

He said they were huge but that you don't ever see them unless you find one dead. Freaked me out to no end. I was watching a video I had taken there and I could hear it them in the background. Maybe I will try and post it so you can compare.

I would have said fox--they have quite a scream to them, and it often sounds something like a yowling tom cat...sometimes a very hoarse tomcat, and sometimes a very shrill one...but I've never heard a fox have that chattering or clicking noise in with his screams.

The clacking sound or chattering sound makes me think Coon. They can hiss and scream too.

Brandi locust would not be out this time of the year in NJ. They are a summer bug.

LOL

Definitely raccoons. I have them in the woods surrounding my property. I'm in Jackson, NJ. They do make sounds like you described and yes, the first time I heard them, I was freaked out. But now I'm used to them. I had trapped one in my barn last summer as she kept getting into my horse and cat feed and making a total mess of my feed stall everyday. The noises she made while in that trap! She was HUGE too (I guees from all the good cat/horse food she was getting).

I'm gonna say raccoons....especially two fighting can make some god-awful sounds. Chattering, screaming, screeching and very loud.

Another possibility is Llamas or Alpaccas... The males fighting sounds like tom cats fighting over a loud speaker.. and this sound carries a long way..
