Dan wants an Ipod for Christmas and I'm not sure what that is exactly. He says it "does music" and that I am supposed to understand that.

So what is an Ipod and how much is this item going to cost me?

What is a good kind of Ipod and where do I find it?

Marty, my son said the same thing to me this year and I had to go to the store and start asking around. Heck, I just sort of learned what an MP3 player is two months ago and now he's trying to talk about this IPOD thingy. From what I am hearing, you can hook it to your computer and download music off the internet. They told me the prices vary depending on how much memory is on the IPOD (i.e. how many songs you can download on to it). Some have screens like CD players that show you the song you are on or something like that. They told me the popular one was the IPOD Nano and it holds 500 songs. Maybe there is more than one Nano, I don't know. The one he showed me held 500 songs and cost $149 I think, but he said there were cheaper ones. I hope that helps and if I am totally out to lunch I'm sure someone will clue me in here.

Ok, Here's the deal with the iPods. CAM you were accurate in what you were thinking. There are basically three "families" of iPods that Apple has out there. They are iPod Shuffle (a cute little 1/2 ounce "clip" that will hold 240 songs and retails for $79), iPod Nano (holds 580 songs up to 2000 songs. Price ranges from $149 to $249 depending on memory that you get on it. The screen is about 1 inch diagonally with the whole unit a little larger then the size of a stick of gum.), and finally the big boy of them all.... the iPod (It holds up to 20,000 songs, up to 25,000 photos, and up to 100 hours of video — or any combination of each per Apple's website and retails for anywhere between $249 for the small unit (7500 songs) and $349 for the large unit (20,000 songs). The cool thing about the iPod (the large one) is that it will show videos and hold photos that you can present to friends and family.

Now for the other part of this whole phenomenon.... You have this fancy little piece of hardware and need to get music or videos or pictures into it. That is where iTunes comes in. You can download a free version of that at Apple's website. Once you have it on your computer you can put your CDs (sorry, no tapes or 8 track please... ) in your computer and "encode" them into data files that will work with your iPod or just to play on your computer. You can also purchase music from the iTunes Store for 99¢ per song or videos for anywhere from $12.99 on up depending on the title.

Have I overwhelmed you :new_shocked: ? GREAT! If you understand all of this jargon FANTASTIC :aktion033: ! If you have more questions ASK

Music it not the only use for an iPod. You can down load lectures into it or other educational info.

Right now I am trying to learn Spanish and I can listen to some of the listens on my iPod as I walk.

Where do you usually buy electronics? Whatever place that is, they will have a selection of IPODS for sale.

What is an IPOD a teens best friend LOL at least in this house. And now she has some thingy that connects to the car stereo so she can listen to the music in her car as well rarely is she seen without it

we had looked for the shuffle but everyoen is out of it. and that was before christmas. so we just got a different brand name that is basically the same thing.

no no no Marty all my friends who have I-pods had them break in less then a year, and there was a news story on it a while back too and it's happen to alot of people. I have a MPIO (brand name) MP3 player it plays MP3's (music uploaded from the computer), i get the FM and AM radio on it, and I can do voice recording with it.

there are also other MP3players that take photos and videos that are not I-Pods and I suggest if you are going to invest one that you look into all the options. Go to the electioncs shop and ask them about them but don't let them suck you into an I-Pod unless it has a good warentee on it.

I invested a whopping 49.99 into my MP3 player (holds over 500 songs) and joined a download program (Rhapsody for about $15 a month) and can download whatever and whenever I want into my player for that monthly fee and I am having a blast. I am not sure the difference between Ipods and the others though? I thought it was just a "name brand" and I am not a name brand kinda gal...

I did see your favorite (most convienent store) sells the nano for $147.88 and they have these which have good ratings for about the same and they play videos http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4570925

Sorry I know you are confused now...

I don't know but I am guessing if you are still on dial up like me downloading music could be a long time?

The iPod comes with a one year warranty right out of the box. You can buy a 2 year "Apple Care" warranty for it though.

I have an iPod that I've had for 3 years now and it hasn't broke and I haven't needed to use the warranty on it. As for which one to buy, if Dan wants something simple, just get the Nano... you can pick it up at Wal-Mart. The other brands... I don't know anything about them but I have been VERY VERY happy with the iPod I have. So, of course, my suggestion would be just to get the iPod.

I have a 40GB Toshiba Gigabeat. I have over 3000 songs in it and there's room for 7000 more. It was way cheaper than an IPOD also. :aktion033: I"ve had it for a year and it's been thru some rough handling and stills surviving :new_shocked:

$190 for a 40GB..you can't get an IPOD for that. I have a subscription to napster. For $15/month I can download all the music I want instead of paying $.99/song.

OH good heavens so sorry I asked now. No way can I drop $150 on one gift! That's way out of my price range. I have to really do some creative stretching of the budget and that's just out of my league. I'm more like in the $49.00 dollar range. And I absolutely cannot handle any more monthly bills. I'm up to my ear balls in legal stuff so I need ideas that aren't going to get me in hock.

I think the Creative ones are alot less than an IPOD and they are at Walmart. I don't know how they hold up though as I don't know anyone who has them. I just do the Napster thing to get more music. CDs can be downloaded to any MP3 player...just a thought on the Creative brand since money is an issue.

I have no idea how I survived without an iPod. It is with me EVERYWHERE.

It was worth every penny

you can also get free music downloads from www.limewire.com - i don't have an ipod or anything else like that yet but i like to make my own CDs to listen to, ever since my car was broken into and they took out my CD player and it had my favorite CD in it which was part of a set and i can't find anywhere to replace it, i keep only copies in my car. i get so tired of commercials on the radio, i just stuff as many songs as i can on a CD and play them, no commercials WOO HOO
