Hay all...I am a newbie here on LB, mostly I just lurk while reading all the good info. But you are all so helpful to others and full of knowledge I thought I would post a question here for you all to ponder. What's the earliest(shortest pregnancy) you've had a foal born that survived? Or the earliest you had a mare bag up before foaling? I have a maiden mare at 287 days if she got pregnant on the earliest possible date. She is huge, has a full and firm bag with milk that does feel kinda sticky when rubbed between my fingers and looks almost white. Her rump muscles are loose and her privates are starting to look relaxed and loose too.. Should I be worried? Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks to all in advance.

What would her days be to her FIRST breeding date? Horses can many time come back into heat again after settling on the previous cycle, making the owners think they were open when bred, and then surprising them a few weeks early. If your mare was bred on the previous cycle to which you are counting, chances are, she would be "full term" and settled on that breeding.

Good Luck!

Earliest live foal I'm assuming you mean. 284 days. The foal is 4 this year and spoiled rotten!

If you are sure of dates...then I would be very suspicious of placentitis...needs to be treated if that is what it is...

That requires antibiotics..regumate and banamine.

Does she have any discharge??? from vagina.

Earliest we have had is also 284 days. We hand bred and that mare bred one day only. We came home to four extra legs in the field and a happy little filly. We also have one mare that consistently foals at 285 - 295 days.

One of my mares foaled this year at 330 days from foaling last year, not sure what that would make her maybe 320?

Yes, I am sure about the dates, she was pasture bred and took on the first heat cycle. I thought about Placentitis, but she does not have any noticeable discharge from her vagina. Or from any where else either, no runny nose or eye goobers and her poop is beautiful, perfect fecal balls, not too dry and no diarrhea at all. She is happy and has a very good appetite, no change to her bag this morning and the foal is active in there. She isn't coughing or rolling or pawing or anything else that would make me think she is uncomfortable, so I really hope she is ok. We are very rural and getting the vet out here is a expensive ranch call for me:eek:(

I had one mare that foaled at 299 days and always foaled near 300 days. Most of my other minis seem to foal around 320 days. Usually ones that might have had an infection went long although they started bagging early!

Count me as one of the ones who got a surprise this year. I had bred the mare once in June and when she came back in heat in August, I didn't breed her again, but she had a colt this year in May!! So they can easily fool you.

286 days gestation. Live colt born and survived. The important thing is being there for the birth and making sure it gets out of the sac.

Our earliest live foal was 291 days. I agree with Joanne, being there is even more important for the early ones, but they can be fine. Big-horse vets may not believe that a foal can live born that early if they have no miniature horse experience.

311 days for me was the earliest.
