I dislike my geldings registered name, and I would like to change it. The part of it that I would like to change is part of the breeders farm name though, and as much as I dont want to offend her by asking to change it, I would like to start showing my horse more next year, and his name has something in it that isnt so delicate. I wouldnt mind if the breeders lastname was still part of his name, or even their farm initials, because they sound fine with his name. Im not sure how to even ask the breeder without hurting anyones feeling though. Any advice would be appreciated.

l don't think you can change a name once it's been registered with AMHA..we have a few with some dumb names but learned to live with them.. :bgrin

Just ask them. Just say "Is there any way I can change this horse's name but keep your farm name on it?"

With AMHR you can do it with a written letter from the breeder. The horse can't have any registered offspring.

It also costs $100 fee.

Good luck,

Andrea

In my case, I just asked. Granted, the part I wanted to change wasn't part of the breeder's farm name, but I figured that since I didn't like the name I would just ask the breeder if she minded. I figured if she got offended, oh well, the worst she could do is refuse--if she never spoke to me again, that was a risk I'd take. I don't know if she was real happy with me, but she did agree to sign the letter consenting to the change. I'm not sure it was so much the name change she didn't appreciate, but the fact that I said I was gelding the horse & didn't want a gelding named "Little Stud"..."Little Sun" was much nicer for him! I had bred two mares to him but got the name change in to AMHR before the foals were born, so that wasn't a problem. I paid the $100 and "Little Sun" he now is.

And, I wouldn't let a bad name choice put me off showing a horse--when you win your class & the name is announced, if anyone comments you can just roll your eyes, shrug helplessly  & say "I DIDN'T NAME HIM!"

Well that is a good question - I have been wondering the same thing myself. We have a mare that we bought who's name is ____Painted Squaw - and I really hate the name. It is very politically incorrect up here in Canada so I was thinking of changing the name if at all possible. We don't call her "Squaw" as it is very offensive to people up here - so we have a different call name for her - but I would like to change her registered name.

The more implies you have shown the horse and I believe if the horse has been shown at a sanctioned event he no longer can have his name changed. I know its that way in AQHA and some times my associations blur together so I would make sure you CAN (and want to cough up the cash) before you ask.

I will say if you called me and asked I would give a resounding NO if you wanted to change any part of my farm name.

I know if he ever sired foals, you cannot change his name. I'm not sure if you've shown him at registry shows, if that means you can no longer change his name. However, there is no way I would let someone take my prefix off a horse I bred. What comes after my prefix would be open to discussion, but my prefix -- no way. I'm not sure there is a way to even ask without offending because farm names mean a lot to most breeders.

The fact that you want to change the prefix would make me say no too. It may not be pretty to you but it is the people's that bred the horse so I am sure it is not offensive to them. I am sure they will be happy to know that you want to show the horse but I am also sure they will want it shown in their name and they deserve that - after all, they did breed the horse.

In AMHR you cannot change the name if the horse has been shown or has progeny. So if the horse is AMHR and you have shown it in an AMHR sanctioned show the name is unchangeable.

Like the others, if the name were eligble to be changed, I would not allow someone to change/remove the prefix.

This is a little differnet, but I was wondering what the edicate is on adding your farm initials/name to a foal you purchased (didn't breed) but wasn't registered and named yet. When the breeder leaves that up to the buyer, can you add your initials? Or is that a no no? Or should you ask the breeder if they would care? Thanks. Lori

If the breeder has not filled out the name or prefix on the application, it is up to the new owner what they want to name it. As a matter of fact, a new owner can NOT use the breeders prefix without permission.

The horse is a gelding and was never bred before being gelded. He has never been shown in a sanctioned show, just small open shows, and 4H. His current name is (breeders lastname) barnyard midas touch, and I was hoping the breeder would allow me to change it to (breeders lastname) Midas touch.

Well you could ask but I doubt the breeder would want their farm name altered.

Andrea

We purchased several weanling horses on application and we put our prefix right after the other farms.

The only part the breeder had filled out was her farm prefix.

We have--

Moss Grove--CJMM Painted Dancer

Moss Grove--CJMM Blaze N Flicka

well I as a breeder would have no problem changing the name in the way you are describing well allowing you to pay for it. The breeders name will still be there seems like you are just wanting to take out the Barnyard?

Guess it depends on the breeder and the circumstances

When I bought my colt he was only 4 weeks old. His breeder asked if I had a name preference, I told her I would like "Sparrow" to be in his name, and asked would she mind if I used my farm name and she said she had no trouble with it. I told her if she wished I'd be more than happy to squeeze both in there and she said she didn't care. Personally I would ask either way. They might want their name on it, they might not. Since they bred the horse I would ask.

That said, I also think that if it was important to have the horse carry their name they should have done the paperwork on it themselves. So while *I* personally feel like I would be obligated to ask I don't know that I would fault someone who didn't.

If the breeder left it up to me, and we hadn't agreed to anything different, I'd use my own prefix on that foal.

Additionally, I have used my own prefix when I have "hardshipped' horses into AMHR off their AMHA papers. I paid the fee and did the papers to get it done and my feeling is if the breeder wanted their prefix on the AMHR name, they could have paid the fee and done the papers. In two cases I kept it the same because I wanted to (think highly of the couple the horses came from) but in other cases, I use my prefix.

Barnyard is just part of the name though, not the prefix?

I bought a mare once and "hardshipped" her from AMHA into AMHR. In AMHA she is Silver Spotted Banana of Circle M. Ew!!! There is NO Banana in her bloodline, either. In AMHR, she is Whinny For Me's Polkadot Perfection (much better, imo... go figure).
