their mini in their back yard?

We're looking to move somewhere where mini's are allowed in your backyard without being miles away from civilization (that's my husband's issue)

.

So, I know some of you are lucky enough to live in or around city limits and have your mini with you, so just where are you located??

Thanks!

When we first adopted Mingus and Thelonius, we lived smack dab within the city limits of Portland, Oregon. We had a 1/2 acre, so I don't know if I would consider it a typical backyard -- they had a good amount of space to run and play.

Portland is very progressive in its attitudes toward "livestock" in town...you need to apply for a permit, keep them 50 feet from any house, notify neighbors within 200 feet, and have a plan for dealing with manure. We went through all of this, then were told that Portland does not consider minis to be livestock, so we didn't need to have gone through the application process.

We've since moved out of town, but we'll always miss taking our boys for walks through the neighborhood and up Mt. Tabor, our nearby city park/dormant volcano.

I'm pretty lucky. We live on 2 1/2 ac. with the schools only 1 mile away and the closest grocery 3 miles away. We live on a street that the properties are not smaller that 1 ac. I would have gone farther inland but my husband wanted to be close to the water for his boat. We are about 1 hour north of Tampa. Happy hunting! Kathy

It is exactly 20 minutes from our front door to the center of downtown Minneapolis (1/2 mile away is a major highway that goes straight through downtown), though we live in a "suburb" of the city, we live in an area that has 5 acre minimums and we have 10 acres. As far as convenience......our schools are 2 miles away and we have a number of stores, restaurants, malls, movie theaters within 15-20 minutes of our house. Minneapolis / ST. Paul International Airport and the Mall of America is 40 minutes.

Lots of people in our area have horses and chose the area for its convenience and location yet rural private atmosphere with all the fields and trees and water all around. Downside I would say there are lots and lots of city rules and restrictions and permits and such needed for anything and everything you do with your land and your animals. The city can even say what height and type your fences can be, and your barn has to match your house and the city has to approve any structural changes or additions (even a little lean-to, you can't store stuff around on your property, you have to have arrangements for manure disposal, you have to worry about people knowing all your business, constant traffic up and down your roads and around your property - both cars and pedestrians and joggers and bikers....

Everything has a trade off, and I like where we are located yet I'd love someplace in the middle of nowhere, secluded and quiet and peaceful.

We live just outside city limits in Tacoma, WA. on a 1/2 acre lot.

It is on a dead end area of housing and neighbors all love the little ones.

There is one place next to the road where they can see them and pet them thru a 5 foot fence.

We keep the lots raked completely weekly and all manure is put into a dumpster for removal. That is the hardest part of keeping them here.

I cart and walk horses and you won't believe the kids you meet that have never seen any kind of horse before! Horses are also accustomed to cars, noise etc. and helps when they go to shows.

Well I am rural BUT Boise Nampa Caldwell in Idaho you can still find horses, sheep, cows, goats right in the city limits......I daho is still very property rights and agriculture oriented.....however they are suffering growing pains so who knows how long this will last

I am about 16 miles from Boise ID and just a couple ok maybe 5-8 I never really checked from Downtown Nampa we have everything we need close by. I have 2.5 acres and luckily am in the county not the city which makes zoning and such much easier.

I live one mile out of town, and yes I keep my horses in the back yard!

HORSE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD! (or so says the sign..off of I-75)..

OCALA, FL!...

We have minis in our back yard. I purchased this acre for $1.00 down. I kept telling people to buy here, but no one listened, and now it goes for like $39K an acre. We purchased 3.73 acres last year for $27K... It was just appraised out, at almost $100K... so now we have 4.73.. (including the acre we live on), and are in the process of building a new home. (Yeah!)

Ocala is an awesome place for horses, the weather is good, there are lots and lots of horse shows, and lots of land that is zoned residential with the exception you are allowed one horse per acre... There is also lots and lots of argicultural land that is zoned for four horses per acre.

We have the BEST medical care you can imagine.. University of Fl... (Shands) is one town up... Peterson and Smith is one of the BEST equine vets and does embryo transplant... you can find almost anything horse here.

I have to say, I love our feed store. He lets me charge feed and hay and gas and such, and when it's payday, I just go settle up with him... It's so much easier then running up a credit card, or going to the bank first...

I love it here! There is still a little cheap land around.... about $5K an acre... on dirt roads... (sooned to be paved)...

God Bless,

Lynn W

Good gravy, do NOT move to the Houston area!

Land here is expensive, the roads aren't close to being designed for the more than 4 million people who drive like
new_2gunsfiring_v1.gif
total friggin' lunatics on them, and the property taxes will eat you alive.

We managed to get only 5 acres and that's at a price 2 1/2 times what we paid for 15 acres in Oklahoma.

Our daily drive ranges from 40-95 minutes...of sheer

pleasure.
