What brand of WNV Vaccine do you use? My vet and I where discussing how with all the rain the mosquitos are already thick this year. I have not done the WNV on my minis, so many people say yes, and no, and so many stories. But my vet and I think it may be good to go ahead and start it. I would like to know what brand you feel is best, and any other input about the vaccine.

Thanks. :saludando:

I do not like Fort Dodge's product. Its the original, and was amazing when it was developed. But there are far superior now. It only lasts three months, requires at least one (two suggested) boosters, and doesn't provide the best protection. It does work, don't get me wrong, but it may not be the best option.

I currently use Recombitek. It lasts a full year and is much more effective. It still requires a single booster though.

There is a new vaccine out now from the makers of Recombitek. Its called Prevenile, I think... its a "vectored" vaccine, meaning it uses another virus to cause the immune reaction. Its supposed to be amazing, and the only vaccine proven to protect against the wild type virus (in lab tests... the other vaccines were much more controlled). Its still a new vaccine, but once its proven I think it'll be amazing

I have used both Fort Dodge and Merial. I am currently using Merial because this was the first one I could purchase without a script from a vet as we do our own vaccinations. I have heard the new prevenile (not sure if that is the correct spelling) is supposed to be good but it is quite costly. I haven't had any trouble with these vaccinations and I will definately continue giving it.

I've used the Merial Recombitek since they came out with it, never had a problem with it, I love that vaccine.

This year however I'm switching to the Prevenile because my vet told me to, it's a far superior vaccine. You only give it once a year and there is no booster needed even on horses that have never been vaccinated for WNV before.

I got mine online from Heartland Vet Supply for the same prace as the Merial Recombitek.

I'll be giving it to my horses this coming week.

So you don't have to booster with the Prevenile? If so to me that is worth the extra cost right there, it is an all day job to give shots around here.

: Is this the only brand that does not require the booster?

You only give one Prevenile shot a year, regardless of whether or not the horse has ever had one in the past.

Does anyone know the price for the Prevenile? I am sure since you only give one dose it is higher than the ones you have to booster.

I got my Prevenile in 5 dose vials from Heartland Vet Supply. It was the same cost per shot as the Merial Recombitek.

The Recombitek is on sale now at Heartland vet supply they have some that will expire in Aug and they are running a special that is what I got this year I have previously used Ft Dodge but prefer not to as I have heard this is better and that I don't need to do a 2nd booster 3 weeks later if horses have been vaccinated already even if with the Ft Dodge.

I was going to use Prevenile but think I will wait just one more year before I do
