Our first mare due is starting to make some slight progress.. Her udder is loosening and begining to drop.. Baby is laying low and she is blowing her winter coat like crazy even though it's only like 12 degrees out (not including wind chill factor, feels more like 6 degrees!) Hopefully we'll see her pick up progress in the next week or two! Her 300 due date is March 4th!

Here's a pic of her from this past summer:

Is this a sign of foaling????? OMG!!! One of my mares is shedding like nobodies business and I was literally just going to post and ask if I should worry about this????? YIKES!!!! It's too early for her! Her 280 day mark is March 21st!!!! Her last live foal was at 280 days.

Thoughts???? :new_shocked: :new_shocked: :new_shocked: :new_shocked:

Most of the mares I've foaled out and friends mares who've foaled, all tended to blow their winter coat starting weeks prior to foaling.. My bay tobiano mare starts shedding very heavily 5-6 weeks prior to foaling.. The silver bay mare I foaled out last year blew her coat a couple weeks prior and my appy mare was around a month prior to foaling, about the same time she started bagging up.. So personally, and from personal experience, I think it could be an indication of preparation for foaling, possibly could be caused by/related to the hormonal changes that the mare is going through as she prepares herself for foaling.. With my bay tobiano girl, she always seems to start losing the bulk of the hair around her flank area first..

Thanks! It's on the flanks on my mare too. Let's hope it's two months before for her! She really needs to keep that baby in the oven a while longer!

My first due this year, is at 300 days and has a nice bag started. She has been shedding good for several weeks now. :aktion033: :aktion033:

We have even more bagging today! Was quite surprised to feel it bigger this morning. :new_shocked: . I was beginning to think it'd be late March by the time she foaled, but maybe not since she seems to have gotten a move on things.. Now watch her make a liar out of me! lol

She's VERY pretty!! The shedding thing confuses me though. I have a mare ready to foal any minute and she's only shedding mildly. She just sweats profusely at night even when its chilly. I'm in So. Central Fl so its only in the 50's lately at night. (heat wave for most of you).

Happy foaling!!

Mhhmm! If you'd been having the crazy weather we've been having, you'd understand; for a while the girly girls all thought it was spring here...in January! BTW Wish I was in Florida
