I retired in 2003 as a chronic disease epidemiologist for the state of Connecticut and now I consult part time from home. My clients include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Wyoming Health Department, which only works because of the internet!

I am an Early Childhood Intervention Specialist - I teach preschool-aged children both typically developing and those with disabilities. I teach in the public school system, so, at least for now, I get to be home with my kids and the horses for most of the summer. I also volunteer for a mission organization called Project REACH. I am involved in writing training modules for early childhood teachers in less developed countries (mostly central and south America right now) and next summer will be traveling to provide training directly to teachers, probably in Guatemala.

I worked for a Bank for over 20 years and then started my own buisness of Dog Boarding and do Obedience Classes and Fungility ( a relaxed form of agility

). I am pretty small and mostly take my Obedience clients dogs for boarding. I love living where we are ( far away from the city in alot of forest ) and it allows me to play with my dogs and horses . I am very lucky !

I work for three charities and do not get any income from that at all.

My hobby has turned into a little side line business for me. Since hus retired I am out of a job but I still needed to earn my own money so I sell greeting cards that I design. I began making cards using graphics that I make many years ago but it was only last Christmas when I started also making hand crafted cards and people began to offer me money for them. I'll make as little as one or do a whole bunch. Since then my card making hobby has taken off a little bit and I use it soley for my horse income. I'm presently doing a rather large order for a horse farm featuring their own horses.

I don't think it is as easy as you think bc each breed has it's own cut and usually they vary from show dog to house pet.

I was a dog groomer for over twenty years, I trained many during that time and some went on to open their own shops. this is what you do. Apply to a reputable dog grooming shop and start out at the bottom, cleaning cages, bathing, etc. Then ask to be an apprentist, using the clippers to rough in the strips only, and watching the groomers do the scissor work. Soon you will get your own strips to do, usually the hard matted ones, and then progress to some light scissor work under supervision. It takes years to get to the professional level. Go to all the groom expos, and eventually ask to scissor a dog or two, maybe just a kennel clip or misty. Prove yourself. If you have the desire and the patience it will pay off. My husband and I own a catering/event planning business.everything from back yard bbq's to weddings, corporate events and fund raisers.The hardest part is working directly with my husband, he's wonderful but we are together 24/7 and during our busy season here in fl. (Nov till Apr)we talk nothing but shop...going to bed discussing the next days events can be a little annoying.I do enjoy the fact that every event we do is different and except for going to the commisary every day...every day we are at a party somewhere!

Of course, there are those that will say I've always been retired

Well I can happily say that I am in the catagory of getting to stay home and play with my babies! My husband farms and hauls livestock and I am a stay at home horse-mom!

My husband and I took early retirement from teaching about 15 years ago and started our own business. We are licensed by the State of Wisconsin as Certified Soil Testers, Septic System Designers, and POWTS Inspectors. (Private On-site Waste Treatment System inspectors).

We began doing this part time in the summers while we were teaching and figured we'd just take early retirement and do it full time, and it's paid off very well for us.

If someone's septic system fails, or if a new home is being built, they call us to come dig holes and determine what type of septic system they can get. We have our own backhoe, and I usually dig the holes with it. My husband gets in the holes and analyzes the soils. While he's doing that I take our laser and shoot elevations all over, and measure the house, garage, driveway, etc., and draw it out on paper, which my husband will "redo" at home, drawing everything to scale. Once that part is done, he designs the septic system that the plumber will install.

We love doing this (except on days when it's 100 degress, LOL), and also love the ability to not have to work every day of the week, and to choose which days we'll work, and it's also great having all winter off!

I bet there aren't too many other people here who do this!

I am a city carrier for the US Postal Service in Asheville, NC, and I absolutely love it! Most days I can't believe I am getting paid to walk around in this beautiful part of the world. (But, my feeling is somewhat different on some harsh winter days!)

My husband is retired, so he does all the hard work for the farm, so I get to enjoy all the hands-on horse lovin'!

I work for one of the largest bull stud farms in the country.. My lab sex-sorts the bull semen so we can provide dairy farmers a higher chance of getting the desired heifer calf. We've also done a few beef bulls and sorted both for male and female, so those who raise beef cattle can choose if they want a bull calf or a female calf.

I am one of those folks who has done a little of a lot of things. After college, owned pet boarding and grooming business for years. Sold out and took a few years off. Became a art framer, work in a gallery for a few years and then opened my own Gallery in a near by town. Did that for 3 years, sold out, took time off again. Started working in a nursing home as a helper, liked it , so at age 51, got a nursing diploma to go along with my Psych. degree that I never used. Worked in the nursing home until the Red Cross recruited me to work at blood drives. Loved being a vampire!

Got remarried and this lovely man asked me to quit work.

Of course I said yes!!!! Now at 59, I work 2 days a week at a Health Club 1.5 miles from home. I was bored staying home and not seeing people all day. I have had horses most my life and really enjoy the freedom to play with them so much now that I am in my 2nd childhood.

I saw that there is some interest in dog grooming here . I will say that of all my jobs & businesses, I loved grooming the best. But being the main groomer, and owner of the boarding facility as well, was 7 days a week, for many years. Most of the time, I had wonderful employees to help carry the load, but I sold out because I was exhausted by it!

I'm licensed as a"Clinical Mental Health Therapist" - but translated into real world terms - I'm a substance abuse counselor. I work from 5am to 12:30pm which means I get to play with my two babies from 1pm until dark. My job is very emotionally stressful and after work my two babies are therapists for me. There is something about being out at the barn working and sweating and brushing ---- making a visible, positive, difference in the life of a living being that does a soul good. I also have a mare (Maggie) that for some reason is able to tell when I just need to lay my head on her back and cry because she will curve her head around while I cry and lay her chin on my side and stand like that as long as I need to cry, or she will lay her head on my shoulder if I'm sitting and I start crying -she will put her head against my chest. She is a great therapist. I often wish very much for some of my clients that I could take them with me to see her. She doesn't work cheap though - she requires a lot of brushing, scratching, petting and she loves food.
