Just out of curiousity, I'd like to know what everyone else does regarding worming their mares when pregnant. Mine stays on the regular 8 week schedule. When not in foal, I rotate between fenbendazole (5 day purge), ivermectin/praziquantel (Eqvalan Gold), and pyrantel pamoate. Since the pyrantel and praziquantel are not approved for in foal mares, I only use Ivermectin and Safeguard throughout pregnancy. What is everyone else's routine?

As long as I have had horses (15 years) I have never rotated dewormer. I all get ivermectin every other month in the spring through fall. Once the hard frost hits they get zimecterin gold onece, maybe twice depending on the year and then thats it until spring.

Ashley, I'm wondering what people do for in foal mares. ie. I know some don't worm at all. Or some use a daily etc. You don't use Praziquantel on your pregnant mares, right? Or do you?

We worm every other month and alternate according to the recommendations - strongid, safeguard, ivermectin is our choice among those they list for each specific time of season.

We keep the pregnant mares on the regular schedule and just insure the wormer is safe/tested for pregnant mares. The mares also get it within 24 hours of delivery (foaling) regardless when they had it last.

We also ensure the label is safe/tested on stallions so as not to affect fertility. Any wormer that does not say safe for pregnant mares and breeding stallions we do not use.

This roation has worked for us for years without any problems with health or worms.

Matt,

We use Ivermectin as our primary wormer and worm our mares on schedule. We also use ivermectin to worm each new MOM when they give birth.....We slip both Banamine and Ivermectin into their mouths and then give them grain. The grain helps get rid of the taste, plus encourage milk development.

Forgot to say that I worm mom within 12 hours of foaling, too, with Ivermectin. Thanks for the replies

They all get the same thing in foal or not.

I've always wormed no differently. I wormed them with EquiMax and Strongid. Only thing I do differently is right after they foal I just worm them with plain Ivermectrin. And worm the foals with SafeGuard til they are old enough to wean and they are then put on the regular schedule.

I have never "rotated" wormers, and Fenbendazole really is not a very efficient dewormer for anything other than encysteds, so that is always given as well as, never instead of, the Ivermectin. Same with the Praziquantel.

I give Iver mectin bi-monthly, then Praziquantel as well as, and Fenbendazole five day as well as, in Spring and Autumn.

I give Praziquantel to in foal mares and have never had a problem. It is cleared in Europe for this use....
