We are starting to condition Shake for his halter classes later this year and one of the things I've always like to do to condition a horse is ponying. Well, I'm a little overprotective (understatement) about him and have no desire at all to try and pony him off of another horse. Well, my husband is a huge cycling fan, his whole family are cycleists. So, I got this 'brilliant' idea of combining his love of cycleing with my love of horses.

Yesterday,we went to his dad's house and picked up a bicycle trailer. (You can see where this is going, can't you? lol) It can hold up to 100 pounds, so we will have to have it reinforced some as I'm about 130. At this point, it only has one wheel which requires a certain amount of balance to keep it upright. We are taking it to a friend of the family who does body work and are having a second wheel put on it and have some supports welded in to reinforce it for the extra 30 pounds of weight.

Okay, so we get the trailer home and hubby wants to try it out. So, he hooked it to his bike and calls me outside to come give it a test ride. OMG! That was the scariest thing I've ever had to sit through. I have no idea how he didn't wipe out. He kept saying "quit wiggling" and I was saying "I'm not wiggling!" LOL He had to have been doing 20 mph down the street in this thing with me squealing in the trailer. The neighbors all got a good laugh.

Anyway, once we get the second wheel on it (I'm not getting back in the thing until that's done) and he gets some practice with it, we are going to teach Shake to pony off of the bike trailer with me in it. That way hubby gets his cycling time and I get to work the horse all at the same time. Does that sound insane to you? lol Any way we go with it, it will at least be fun.

I am not sure I would get into that thing. What abour sitting on the tailgate of a truck and letting the horse come along behind?

At least he won't be afraid of bycicles!!!

Last year I was working with a horse that was terrified of motorcycles, so for a long time I ponied her off of my bycicle. Then I added pop cans to it to make an obscene amount of noise.... it's the best I could do since I don't got a Harley.

I now own this horse, and routinely pony her off the big noisy tractor!

LOL No, Shake will not be afraid of bicycles after this! He's already seen a motorcycle and it didn't phase him, so I have high hopes.

Katiean, I'll give it a try one more time once the second wheel is on, but not a minute before. LOL

Oh I can imagine,,,

We just bought one for our granddaughter and she loves it...

Not sure if I could get down that low...

Sounds like a quality family time plan, just hope that Shake doesn't stop quickly for anything LOL. Have a great time.

ROFL! I'm less worried about him stopping quickly than I am about my husband stopping quickly and putting Shake into my lap!

As far as getting down that low, this one is a flatbed type trailer for the bike, so I don't have a roof to deal with. I'm short, but I'm not THAT short. lol
