    Breeding and the grey gene

If color is an important part of your breeding program, I'd say, avoid the grey gene altogether. There are plenty of horses that have conformational quality and proper size that don't carry the grey gene and thus, won't risk the 'loss' of desired patterning. I don't believe that whether the...

    Can you identify this item?

    I'm betting Renee is right.

Would you geld a teenaged stallion?

Gosh,I have to agree with JAX. I would not want such a vet to do the surgery on this older stallion. Can you hold off until you can find one that is an accomplished horse vet, preferably w/ experience in gelding miniatures, and has specifically done other older ones? Best of luck whatever you...

Would you geld a teenaged stallion?

I second Chandab on the cold hosing and walking. Don't 'pressure spray'the incision area, just do as Chandab suggests, for @ 10 min. per session. Good luck! Margo

Mare won't stand for live cover. Any ideas/suggestions?

I had(have; she just came home from a lengthy 'free'lease; sadly, in very poor condition...lesson learned, never again) a 30" broodmare. She was adamant about NOT accepting a stallion when she had a foal at side, no matter how strongly in heat she was. I have breeding hobbles that I sewed up...

    Touchy feet after a trim

Keritex, I think it is, makes a sole/hoof toughener...try looking it up for fuller info. I can't speak to its effectiveness, but it seems legit. A friend gave me some when she let go of her last driving pony...I do know it is basically a liquid, is brushed on. Nothing thick or 'goopy' or hard to...

    post natal driving

Should be fine to allow baby to follow freely; however, I'd sure do my driving in a safely enclosed area, not 'out in the open'. Foals are given to dashing madly about w/o advance warning, don't want baby rushing into the path of traffic, etc.!

    Vaccines online?

Amysue--are flu and rhino considered part of 'the basics' vaccine wise, back East, and not Eastern and Western encephalitis(or is it,encephalomyelitis?) Just asking because out here in the SW, Eastern, Western, and sometimes Venezuelan enceph, are always considered part of basic needed equine...

Hoof boots for driving on pavement.

My take on this? I wouldn't say 'impact', but possibly, 'pressure'...and that contact w/ the ground surface is said to be especially important to the FROG of the hoof, which acts as a sort of 'pump' for blood circulation. While a very gradually-increasing exposure to uneven surfaces, such as...

    Driving Accident Prevention

Paintponylvr make some good points.I wear a LOUD whistle on a shoestring around my neck; it would draw attention in a pinch, if there is ANYONE within earshot. I always try to have a pocket knife in my pocket, but wouldn't count on it to cut a harness; there ARE 'specialized' cutting tools w/...

    I need some advice

I would pass on this horse. It is my understanding that a horse that has ever had ANY degree of founder is more likely to have that reoccur than a horse that hasn't. In over 60 years of daily horse-keeping and management, I have never, before or since, had a horse founder until I purchased a B...

    Driving Accident Prevention

Disneyhorse....it was one of the handlers who told me it was Freedman harness, because I asked who made it. Was several years ago, right down in Albuquerque. I've never heard of the other maker you mention, but then, I wouldn't have, because I'm not in any way 'involved' w/ Draft horses, except...

    Driving Accident Prevention

I have now seen the video from several sources, and agree, it was amazing! In my view, it was a testimonial to the proper temperament being bred into the Bud Clydes, thorough and proper training, very knowledgable and prepared handlers, having plenty of those right 'on hand', and, TRUST between...

Possibly pregnant mare wont eat grain

I understand and appreciate that you care for your mare and want to do the best for her! I fully agree that she is very likely to have ulcers, and from personal experience, can attest to how serious ulcers can be. I agree about not using ANY 'sweet feed'(grain mixes w/ molasses, basically); they...

    Vaccination time again

This is a subject I've been giving a lot of thought for some time now. My 'herd' of four range in age from about 11-12(unregistered,exact age unknown), to 31 1/2. I have given the oldest 'only' an EWT for several years. last year no vaccination; the others, EWT and W.Nile, plus last year, gave...

    Easy boots

You can use Vetwrap to wrap the hooves for traction on indoor surfaces; just be sure to keep it only on the hooves; don't wrap above the hairline at the coronet-and don't stretch it TOO tight when wrapping. I have a set of the 'pony' sized 'classic/original' Easyboots. They fit my B sized mini...

    Hoof troubles

Completely agree with the two prior posts! Would also like to see a full picture of the horse. Please let us know what your vet and the X-rays tell you,,,,

    New addition to the farm

The generic terms "pinto" and "paint" are interchangeable as references to horses w/ certain kinds of spotting patterns. If CAPITALIZED, then one might presume that the reference is to horses REGISTERED with one or the other of the major registries for horses of those patterns...Paint, meaning...

    Homemade Harness Pads???

The tree in treed harness saddles is of a spring steel; rigid, but should have a bit of 'flex'; if it is treeless, even w/ the padding, it should flex much more freely.Because the 'channel' in that one is so narrow, it appears that it might not allow much flex, due to padding 'meeting' padding...

    Vaccination question

Why would you need to give a booster at such a short interval at all, unless the initial vaccination was the first the horse had EVER received? I have switched makers a number of times over the years, never considered or gave a booster of the 'new' brand after the interval you mention. Horses...
