    mare and reproduction

I would be wanting to know her reproductive history. Has she had foals before and when? Recent foaling, she's probably fine. Several years since the last one, could be a red flag. Best bet is to have a reproductive exam done on her by a veterinarian before purchase.

How long is gestation for minis?

I start watching for udder development by day 280 of gestation. Any udder before that, can be a red flag and I may choose to treat the mare for placentitis. Mares here generally foal between days 300 and 340. So, they can really be all over the place and it pays to watch them closely...

    Neck wrap, to big ?

Looks like the right size to me. That's what I would be using.

    AMHA going Perm.

Just my personal opinion, but AMHA places a lot of value on those papers. With DNA requirements, it is likely that the horse in front of you is what the papers say it is. If a stallion is worth breeding, it's worth having papers that verify it's heritage. Same with mares. Those papers...

Cedar Toxicity – Trees in Pastures

I have many red cedars here and have seen no ill effects with my adult horses. I do have occasional, unexplained fetal development/foaling issues and I may do further research as to whether the cedars could be the culprit. The horses do like to rub on them some during the summer and cedar does...

    Alfalfa pellets

I've been feeding alfalfa pellets for many years and actually feed them as the main staple of my horses diet. Feed them as you would hay. Increase the amount if weight is needed. And with your long stem hay, too, she should gain weight and be in good shape in a few months.

What pre foaling shots do you give your pregnant mares

I don't vaccinate pregnant mares for anything during pregnancy. I've had mares abort in the past after vaccinations of all kinds, so I hold off vaccinating pregnant mares. I do vaccinate my mares after foaling and before breeding back. Normally, I do EWT and WN. Rhino/flu to those that have...

It's usually around $3000 for quarantine and shipping. Transportation to the quarantine facility is normally an extra charge.

Ft. Worth Stock Show - Who's attending?

Wow, Tony! You must be nuts! LOL I agree with keeping miniature horses in front of people and like Jan, I used to do that show every year, too. Including body clipping. But, I hate clipping horses in the middle of winter and having to keep them blanketed and they are still cold, so I quit...

    Need dentist in central Oklahoma

I think OSU may be a good place for dental work. I'm probably going to be taking some there. 'Tooth bumps' are not uncommon in miniatures, both top and bottom jaws. But, if they are severe, or interefere with eating, it does pay to have them looked at.

    Pregnant mare & alfalfa amounts

Alfalfa is highly unlikely to founder a miniature unless your horse is overweight to start with. As has been pointed out above, alfalfa is actually quite low in NSC and is a diet some foundered horses can tolerate. Every horse I own is on alfalfa in some form. Plus my client show horses...

    Pregnant mare & alfalfa amounts

Feed your cubes as you would hay. Measure the weight dry. 1 - 2 lbs per hundred pounds of body weight dry cubes per day. Adjust the amount up or downdown if you are feeding other hay. Soak if you want.

    Gastrogard vs. GastroMax3

I bought Gastromax3 to try the next time I have an ulcer symptom horse. So, I haven't used it yet, but it should be a very good product to treat ulcers as well as prevent them.

    equine illness

So sorry for your losses! Since multiple horses were involved, my first suspicion would be toxins of some sort. Something in the feed, hay or water. Or even something in the pasture. Chemicals, herbicides or pesticides. Grass clippings? Hope you can figure it out and no more sick horses or...

    Gelding questions

Rita, 'drying out' is a term used in Arabian horses basically meaning that as a foal matures, it's bone structure becomes more refined and pronounced and the horse looks more 'sinewy' all over. I've seen somewhat plain headed Arabs become gorgeous headed as they mature. I've never seen this...

NEW STALLION at ROKO Miniature Horses

Congratulations, Robin! While black based stallions are my first choice, too, a great stallion and the best fit for your herd can be any color.

Weaning and feeding your mare question

I simply cut my mares feed back to a non nursing mare amount after weaning and they dry up just fine.
