    WeeFoal 38

Just done trials using these tests: Used a "true" 38 day sample as I only bred the mare once. Needed four drops of urine to get the test to run and then took another 14 mins for the positive line to show. It was so faint I couldn't even get a photo of the line!!!! Retested same mare at day 60...

Memories to share of my friend whos gone

Thank you for sharing that - it bought a big smile to my face reading it! Just goes to show you our treasures aren't always shiny - they also meow, snort, whinny and bark

    Agrophobic Cat

She made a liar out of me last night - not only did she come outside by herself (while I'm trying to call tabby boy IN) but stayed outside for quite a while. I was worried as it was dark and I HATE the cats outside at night! Bless the biscuit bin rattle powers Hasn't shown any inclination to...

    Calling all self trimmers/farriers!

You've probably already done this but if you want learning tools, Jamie Jackson DVD is fabulous used in conjunction with his book Pete Ramsey is another one with good visual tools. On another note, I think some minis just have naturel oval shaped feet. Two of my mares certainly have so...

    Agrophobic Cat

I suppose some of my own prejudice comes into it - I have always thought the absolute captivity of domestic cats as cruel. They are "supposed" to be outside sleeping in the sun, chasing insects, climbing trees etc etc. Never really thought of anyone in NZ, particulary where I found her, as...

    Agrophobic Cat

Hi everybody. I rescued a cat off the side of the road about 6 weeks ago. As far as I can tell the poor baby was dumped. She was living under a hedge on a back country road. I picked her up, covered with fleas and as skinny as a rake and bought her home (via the vet for a checkup, deflea and...

    Calling all self trimmers/farriers!

LOVE the barefoot method Since I started doing it, have had horses stop waving their legs all over the place, track up better, laminitis horses move......the list goes on. Certainly will never use a "real farrier" ever again. Say what you want about barefoot in regards to saddle horses, but...

    Calling all self trimmers/farriers!

Keep doing what you are doing, it takes time to get those heels to open. It is certainly possible. Am I right in thinking you are barefoot trimming? Certainly looks like it with the beval on the hooves. What I found when swapping horses from the "old" method to the barefoot method is they do...

    Warts.....eeew

Warts - joy.... Since it's in such an awful place, I would get the homeopathic remedy Thuja. Give her two pills three times a day for three days. That should dry it up. Warts usually go for a magnesium deficient host so maybe add some dolomite to your mineral licks or magnesium to the bail...

    Wonder Mare

Dez mares - they can be sneaky alright! I had a 37.5" mare who hadn't gotten in foal for three years. Sent her off to friend to go to stud, never cycled. Bought her home, thinking "oh well, maybe she's never going to have another foal". Walked out one morning to find a tiny (for her) filly...

    Blue Eyes

Some do, some don't. I have a chestnut and white with a large blaze which falls off the side of her face, sabino ticking. Two BROWN eyes. Daughter also has two brown eyes with white on the face. Both tobiano pintos. Daughter no ticking. Had minimal buckskin pinto - no white on face two BLUE...

    Blue Eyes

Weeelllll, considering I just posted that the actual genetic link is poorly understood maybe we're all just going around in circles!! All I know is my tobianos have no overo in them and we get blue eyes. So there is SOMETHING there. Hopefully some scientist-type-person will get interested and...

    Building Topline while losing weight

I have a horse here that I bred who I'm preparing for a show. I asked to prep him because his current owner had let him get fat and was bemoaning the fact he wasn't doing any good in the ring! (I mean honestly, what did she EXPECT!) Have worked out from talking to her mother they were basically...

    Breeding question

I actually had one mare who wouldn't settle unless she was paddocked served! She came to me having been hand served to get her first foal, but after that it was paddock serve or nothing! I ran my then two year old with mares over winter as he was just full of himself. The girls sorted him out...

    Blue Eyes

I just pulled out my horse colour genetics book (Sponenberg) and he has stated the Sabino is often wrongly linked in with Overo category. Becky I have a number of Tobianos and a line with Sabino in it and they often throw up blue eys, so I'm with you! In relation to the blue eyes, the only...

    Changes in hoof angle

The best form of trimming that I found (and ask anyone who really knows me I analyse everything to death!) is Jamie Jackson's form of barefoot trimming. Google Jamie Jackson and you will find out about his books and DVDs. They easy to understand and watch. Another guy who has good books and...

    Changes in hoof angle

I agree with what Carolyn said - the first photo does long like she was long all over. It would be easier if we were there to pick it up and have a looksee - so I will only comment on what I can see and what I've personally seen in horses with similar looking hooves. However (I do all my...

    thinning a mega-mane

I've had yearlings with this problem and actually found by undercutting their manes (removing all the dead dry stuff) and letting the good, slick mane on top worked really well. I kept clipping the undercut part. For some reason the mane naturally thinned for the next seaon. They are all fed...

Red Duns - anyone got one? Pictures please

Thank you all very much for posting those pics. Made me go have another look as he is wayyyyy darker than those pics. As luck would have it, had pictures printed off and showed another breeder today. She had one exactly the same last year! AND he's a chocolate silver. So that solves the...

Red Duns - anyone got one? Pictures please

I've got a new foal on the ground - by a buckskin pinto out of a choc silver pinto. The wee fella has has a red body, dorsal stripe and a charcoal grey mane and tail. I THINK he's a red dun (4% chance on the colour of his parents, but stranger things have happened!) - we won't have any point...
