i would either use wasp spray, pepper spray or your whip. i read that wasp spray works just like pepper spray but you can spray at longer distances. with most dogs a verbal spanking and your whip will do, but some dogs need a little more 'persuasion' to leave you and your horse alone.

what is the best brand or type of cart to get for a team, a metal or a wooden one? i've heard some people say wooden because it's heavier and sturdier but i'm not sure... ETA: also, how do you go about hitching up a team? i know how to hitch a single horse but i've never had to hitch a team...

i would never drive without a check. IMO, its dangerous to drive without one. There are so many bad things that can happen, especially if your driving a team without checkreins. i've seen what can happen and i never want that to happen to me. to each their own, i suppose.
