Thoughts/Experiences with Getting "Older" Mare in Foal

I have a 24 year old mare. Dam of multiple AMHA World Grand Champions. I got her as an 18 year old and she was in foal. Did not like the colt she had, did not like the stallion she had been bred to. What a waste of a good breeding in my mind. She is an every other year mare, so two years...

What do you do with your aged stallions and mares.

I still have my first Mini and she will stay here till the end. I got her as a weanling. I also have one that I bought when she was 18, a producer of multiple AMHA world Grand Champions, when she was getting older, she was sold. I tracked her down and got her in foal at 18. I was hoping to...

Weight loss after moving to Florida.

There is no other hay available. All the hay went to Texas. costal hay can have good nutrients if it is grown right, for horses and not for cattle. We raised the grain to 14% to offset the perhaps lower % of protein in the costal hay. the grass is starting to grow, so hopefully the mares...

    "Smokey" blacks...keeping them from "fading"

Smokey blacks will never look as black as a true black. That dilute gene just gets in the way. Keep him in during the day, as others have said. I have had many smokey blacks and many you can not dye the mane and tail as it tends to look funny on the odd color black. I also found that no...

Horses attacked by pit bulls (update on page 9)

I am so sorry to be reading about this. It has been a fear of mine since i moved to Florida. It seems that the Pit bull here is the state bird... Everyone has one. My neighbor down the road says there are 3 that come down our road every morning and one is really nasty. i live at the end of...

    Is PayPal Safe?

There are now PayPal scams too. When I was moving I posted on Craigs list many things I had for sale. Several scammers wanted to buy the items unseen and pay by PayPal. I told them no, that I would not touch PayPal. That I wanted cash. Never heard from any of the scammers again. and by the...

    Is PayPal Safe?

They could still take back the deposit and have a year to do so. These are things PayPal only puts in the fine print. by the way, they can do that with inanimate objects too. It is an incredible hassle working with PayPal if the buyer does this. IF..you can get someone to talk with you they...

    Is PayPal Safe?

I would not touch PayPal with a 10 foot pole. Yes, if someone stops the payment, after they have the animal, one has no recourse with PayPal. They take their money back or hassel you to give it back to them. It takes 3 months to get the problem solved and they do NOTHING to help that along...

    Breeding wisdom

A long neck does not come with a long head, but often comes with what is perceived to be a longer back. A balanced horse will be equal from crown to withers and withers to croup. So, in reality, a freaky long neck will seem to be longer in the back. A good hip is desirable. My new stallion...

    Breeding wisdom

I agree 100% with this. The mare power is so important. You may get some decent foals by breeding a mediocre mare to a good stallion. But, good chances are the foals will not be able to produce as good as they may look. There are many top breeders who stallions are doing well and they are...

Florida people - are you clipping yet this year?

I am new here in Florida, almost 6 months. I bought a place that has no out buildings or fencing. The fencing is up, but the barn will have to wait, so I ordered a car port that will be here on Monday. Then my show horses will be shaved down and blanketed when they need to be. Many of my...

    Unusual color patterns

I was told that is why Marbles is a brindle. Her sire is a smutty/sooty buckskin. Her dam was a red roan. Marbles got the sooty gene from her sire and it went crazy. Looking forward to see what she can produce. She is 3 this year and I am toying with breeding her to her sire this year/ (It...

Open the AMHA Studbook to Hardship AMHR Horses

I totally agree with you. I left AMHR years ago, because they are not a Miniature horse club, but just a Miniature registry. They are though, a Shetland horse club. I saw the writing on the wall years ago. AMHR was making tons of money for the Shetland club, and yet they had no say and were...

Do You Think EINSTEIN Is A Dwarf?

The key word here is: Doctor Rachel Wagner is a PARTNER of owner Judy. She is part of this nonsense that Einstein is a perfect little horse, buying and promoting him for the money that the media blitz, books and now games (OMG) that they are making off of this poor DWARF.

Do You Think EINSTEIN Is A Dwarf?

That is exactly what bothers me. Not that he is a cute horse, but that he is being heavily promoted as a fine example and perfectly proportioned Mini horse. They have said it quite often omht. Now the public heres this, sees him, sees the book about him and now a game about him, the public...

Do You Think EINSTEIN Is A Dwarf?

SAndy, Einstein's owners sold him almost at birth, so they are not the ones promoting him. I have said before, and I will say it again. My feeling is they bought him just to promote him. They have no idea how to handle a horse, especially a stallion. If you go to the web page about him...

Do You Think EINSTEIN Is A Dwarf?

And there you go......a horse that should never be bred. I will state again, he is a dwarf.

My opinion of Purina Horse and Pony Feed now

I had my horses on it for 3 months and just about every one of them lost quite a bit of weight. Not good. Some got very skinny. So I switched feeds and they are all starting to slowly gain weight again. Will not touch it again.

    apricot and brindles

You are right, I read it wrong. I thought the foal looked an awful lot like her. Dumb me. Sure wish she had had a brindle foal. I am kind of scared to breed Marbles. I would so hate to loose her.
