My veterinarian could have said "I told you so..."

I had her out to do our WNV and Rabies shots and opted to do the three way and Rhino-Flu on my own (I have done this with our barn cats and had vaccinated my minis early on).

Our minis had not had reactions to vaccines other than a stiff neck occasionally but this year. Independence had a full blown reaction to one of the vaccines... no swelling at her neck but she was feverish and was standing like a foundered horse with her hind feet under her. Her feet were cool to the touch but she was chilled and sweating and even though she was eating, I could tell she was feeling miserable.

Spoke with our veterinarian and gave her Indy's vitals... 3ccs of Banamine later, Indy was back as her normal self. Told our veterinarian that she can administer all Indy's vaccines next year

: . Freedom and Mercy did not have any problems with their vaccines and the vaccines all came from the same lot.

Returned from Horse World Expo with my damaged knee in worse shape - surgery scheduled for June 26th. Mercy and I had fun, though!

That must have been scary! However, don't think it has anything to do with how you gave the shot necessarily. It could have something to do with the shot itself and she could have reacted the same no matter who administered it.

Thank you very much for the words of encouragement... Indy is doing much better but I hate to think I did something and I have administered many a vaccine over the years. She is back to picking on the Morgan fillies and babysitting Nefertiti (who turned a year old yesterday).

Another thought comes to mind too.........If the vaccines are given too close together in time, a reaction can happen to some horses too.

Our beloved horses are all so fragile, aren't they? People who don't know horses have no idea how many dangers horses face. So glad this turned out okay for you.

Glad everything turned out well!

I would think you should change brands of vaccines - most reactions are to the adjuvants and different companies use different vaccines.

That must have been very frightening! :new_shocked:

I'm glad to hear she's doing fine now though. :bgrin

What brand of vaccines were you using? My vet has mentioned a few that seem to cause more reactions than others.
