I am hooked on sour cream&onion potato chips but if I open the bag I can't keep my hand out.I am trying to eat better and get rid of a few(lots)pounds to reduce the stress on my knees. One has been replaced twice and the other is due for surgery in September(I walk like I'm 90 years old)I love the salt and the crunchy stuff.Any suggestions on alternatives for when I get the munchies?Pretzels sometimes work but I can't leave the bag alone either.Individual bags work min pretzels, but not in chips.

I am a chip-a-holic too. I can easily skip meals and eat chips instead.

Instead of buying big bags, you can start buying the little bags. That way you can still have them, but in moderation. Or Kelloggs sells sour cream and onion crisps. They aren't exactly chips, but they still have a crunch and yummy flavor. Popcorn and crackers are also a healtier alternative. I find that not having chips in the house is the easiest solution for me. Instead I keep bags of frozen french fries handy and cook some up when I need something salty.

I think you can get sour cream and onion rice cakes, they wouldn't be quite as bad. There are a couple different types of sour cream and onion snack crackers, if its the flavor you crave more than the chip.

Why not split the bag up into single servings by putting them in zip lock sandwich or freezer bags and that way you can take one serving and not mindlessly eat the whole bag. I find if I have to get up and go get another portion it is easier to decide not to. Another idea is to make popcorn and buy those flavoured toppings (a dry powder that you sprinkle on) then you can cut the fat and decide just how much flavour is enough. The toppings have a bit more salt than they should but so do chips.

The rice cakes are so good! They come in lots of flavors - sour cream & onion, sweet chili, cheddar cheese, etc.

Do you drink enough water? Often when you crave salt it means you're not drinking enough water and your body is trying to retain what little you do have. So something to help curb your cravings might be to get a water bottle and try to keep track of how much you intake each day. It sounds silly, but it really helped me. I also drink a big glass of water before each meal-helps keep my portions down.

That being said, i still get my cravings

Homemade popcorn with just a wee bit of salt and a tish of lite butter does the trick and is not too bad for you, though is still a "treat".

Did a 100 calorie bag of popcorn tonight and that worked.I drink(most days)close to 1 gallon of water so I think that is enough.I thought earlier today about small bags but I didn't have big bags to seperate from. Will try that after I go to grocery store.Tried Special K crackers-didn't satisfy-still have those. Will look for rice cakes-have tried them before and I likem them.Significant other is the sabateur. He will bring home things he knows I like.He has lost weight and is now below 200lbs and is upset. He's only 5'8" and looks pretty good for an older man.Strong as an ox,but he thinks he should be fatter.Only 1 I know who gets upset about losing weight.

Try the baked potato chips (and no dip)--they're way less fattening and they're really good--almost taste like singles! =)

Went to Walmart today- no rice cakes. Will try our other 2 grocery stores in town later this week otherwise I have to go 20-30 miles to another town&check out their stores.Did get some Herrs sourdough pretzel nuggets.100 caloris for 11 and they are definitely salty&crunchy. They will help with some of the crunchy salty needs.Did get more exercise today- went to local pool&walked in the water for 1 hr.Didn't hurt the knee too much.Back again 2 more times this week I hope. Can't wait until I can go back to gym after I get doctor's ok next week I hope. Why is it so much more work getting fit and losing weight than putting it on.I just sat on a chair lifted my fork and stuffed my mouth. No effort at all.

That is wonderful!!! I would think that water therapy would be really good for your knee as there is no resistance. Bet that felt good!

Bevann try this: Portion control!

When I know I'm going to eat the whole bag down to nothing, I pour out a decent amount. Then, take like 3 rubber bands and close the bag. Put it away. Then it will be too much trouble to get up and go get them back out and undo the rubber bands.

My dang knee went out again yestarday. The pain the pain.........

Found some quaker rice snacks and some crackers that are sour cream&onion Now I am counting out about 100 calories worth and then putting away the bag.I can do this.Knee is doing better-got to the pool 3 times this week and just moved in the water 1 hr each time-then 10 minutes in the hot tub.No pain just some discomfort.I know if I get off some lbs it will help the pressure on my knee, plus I won't have to go naked(causing many people to have heart failure)this summer due to having no clothes that fit other than my robe.I've done it before_I can do it again .My next surgery is very soon after labor day so I need to be much more fit by then.In my next life(when I come back here)I'm requesting to be thin and able to eat anything I want without gaining weight.Marty,if you are having knee trouble and you need to get a replacement you will know when the time is right. The pain will be so bad it keeps you from functioning and doing everyday tasks.I can't wait to get my other knee done, but my doc is so busy I have to wait until Sep(Made the appt in Dec)Hope your knee stops hurting
