I just ordered the DNA kits for my new foal, the dam and the sire so that I can register the foal. Has anyone done this?? There's a lot of help online but I want to be sure I send the right thing...They say pull roots and all. How EXACTLY do you do this, how much and where? Anyone had good luck with doing this correctly? Maybe I am overthinking this...THANKS

Heres a short article I wrote on it

How to Pull Horse DNA

The "kit" is just a piece of paper.

The key is to give a really quick jerk so that the root balls comes out. Do not touch them or you contaminate the sample.

If you have a hard time pulling the mane hair, I have used tail hair too, works the same and is easier to pull.

Don't try to pull all the needed hairs out in one spot - it might take several "pulls". Pull a few mane or tail hairs (for foals especially use tail, and pull quickly and firmly), look at them to make sure you have the "bulb" on the end, and move to a different area to pull more. And if you are doing more than one horse be EXTREMELY careful that you do not mix or contaminate the hair.

Good luck.

Yes, I agree take only a very few hairs at one time, pull a few times if needed. Fast jerk/pull and tail hairs are easier to pull for me too.

Yes, "KIT" is only a piece of paper with box to tape hairs onto.

I also use a pulling comb... a small metal comb, take just a few hairs, comb back the rest and wrap the hair around the comb...a fast pull is all it takes, if it doesn't come out fairly easily, then you have too much hair.... also really helpful if the horse is warm when you pull them... opens the follicles to allow them to pull easier.. sometimes I pull after working a horse or on a warm day.

For me a "few" is 3-5 hairs. they come out fairly easily if you only pull that many at a time. I also wear rubber gloves to avoid contamination, changing gloves between horses.

The very first time I purchased the DNA "kit" I was expecting some kind of box with maybe some interesting tools or test tubes or fun paraphernalia. I was all geared up to play the mad scientist in the lab. Imagine my surprise when nothing showed up except a dumb piece of paper. I was like "Where's this $40. kit I just paid for?" Banging head on desk.

I just got a DNA "kit" and this time it wasn't even mailed - I think I got a link to download it!

Marty, you are HILARIOUS!!!! Thanks to everyone else for the great advice!!! We will begin the process shortly. I had no idea you had to be so darn careful with the stuff...plastic gloves...etc. WOWEE. What a process it is :0)

Okay...It's been 2 weeks and I still haven't heard from the AMHA on his registration papers. I emailed them and they said they are received, but not processed. Does anyone know how long this takes??

I just did my appaloosa stallion. They send you a piece of paper, pretty much tells you what to do on the paper. I know when I DNA'd my arabians, was almost $90/horse, more if I had not been a member at the time. So to me $41 is cheap. I still have one mare to DNA, but all my others that are AMHA are already done(either PQ'd or DNA'd).

If you have sent in the hair samples, you are now waiting on UC Davis, not on AMHA. They take their time. Be patient.

It generally takes 6 - 8 weeks to get registration papers on a horse that DNA is requested at the same time. As Songcatcher pointed out, UC Davis is a bit slow and the whole process takes time.

I haven't been able to send in the hair because I am still waiting on the DNA kits to be sent to me to send in the hair. See, I sent in his registration papers and a request for 3 DNA kits-Dam, Sire and Foal. I haven't heard back on any of it. I was just getting worried. If it takes 6 weeks or so then I know that now and I can relax. I just figured it would be a matter of typing in the registered name and sending out the pieces of paper for me to stick the hair to. THANK you guys for the advice!!!!

So, you haven't received the DNA kits yet? I would contact AMHA today and ask that they be sent to you. The 6 - 8 weeks time frame is after the kits have been sent to UC Davis. No reason for the DNA testing to not be in process.

I have this figured out about both A and R. A cashing your check right when they receive it, and R waits till they are sending it back.

I requested a DNA kit at about the same time, and instead of getting a "kit" in the mail, I got an E-MAIL with a link to download the form. Have you checked your e-mails?

I am still waiting for the papers... but I figure that is the wait from the time I sent in my hair sample.

No I haven't recieved them yet. I will email tomorrow. And I have been checking my email. It is tied to my cell phone :)

Okay, just to keep you guys updated, it's a long story but I finally got the dang papers set, hair pulled and DNA kits sent back in to UC Davis last Monday. According to what you said above, I should be waiting up to eight weeks now (especially with the holidays). I am assuming that AMHA will not send his papers to me until they get the DNA results back...that would make sense anyway. Supposedly the name I picked with the help of fellow forum users was acceptable. "Stormys Golden Timber Buck". It sounds regal to me...LOVE IT. I am very excited to get all of this stuff done and in the history books. I will let you guys know how it goes. THANKS AGAIN!!!
