Is AMHR going to be replacing pictures with every transfer?

I took pictures of a scruffy looking horse just for transfer purposes and the papers came back with those pictures on them even though the horse had new papers with pictures! I wasn't expecting that or I would have tried to make the horse more presentable.

I just wondered if this is standard policy with the new registration papers.

The way I understand it, per the rule sheet and confirming before I sent in the transfers for my Big City babies, you do NOT need to send any pictures at transfer when the horse already has new style papers. If you do send pictures and want them to be updated (the photographs) on the new style papers, there is an additional $20 fee.

Reading what you said, if I understand what happened, I wonder if they thought you wanted updated papers (as you weren't required to send in pics) and they didn't realize you didn't pay the fee to obtain them?

I still think it's confusing as to whether new pictures are required or not. At the top of the 'picture requirement' form, it says pictures are required with ALL registry work. At the bottom, it says new pictures are NOT required if the papers already have them except for temp to perm or color/markings changes or if the owner just wants new pictures.

So, I gather I didn't need to send new pics? How will AMHR know if it's the same horse being transferred if new pics aren't required?

I think what happened was the paper about the pictures was written first, then that bottom part that says pictures aren't required to transfer horses w/ new papers was added as that situation came up? It would be a lot easier to understand if it was re-written.

Reading it, I thought pictures at transfer were not required to transfer ones w/ new style papers (based on last paragraph) but before I sent in transfers on my Big City foals, I called to confirm and was told that's correct. In that situation, no new papers are required.

I understand your point but the flip side is, would you buy a horse if you saw it didn't match the registration pictures? So maybe the responsibility is on the new owner to be sure they got the right papers for their horse. Personally, I think it is a good idea to require pictures at the transfer of a horse, but I did appreciate the time it saved me not having to get any registration style shots of Bomb Shell and Blue this fall.

I'm glad this topic came up. I was just ready to inquire about photos too. I have a colt to register this year, and one to bring permanent. I didn't know if I had to send pictures of both of them..or just wait on the colt until he goes perm. I am so bad at taking pictures. I tried my best, and will have the pictures back today. I hope at least some of them turn out. Seems I always cut off feet or nose..or heads..lol! Will the reg. take pictures that all the parts are at least in one picture: the whole head in one but no feet..feet in one but no ears.? I don't want to send them pictures like that, but ..well..I really AM a horrible photographer..

Everything here is mud and wet..can I use his dry newborn pictures if they are good?

Also, the profile shots, do they have to be completely from the side..dead on..or, can they be a little sideways as long as you can see all 4 legs and all the parts..?

Here's a link that explains the requirements:

You do need pictures to register, and to bring from temp to perm. If a horse doesn't already have photos on their papers, then you need pictures to transfer as well.

As I understand it, you need left and right side pictures (not sure how much of an angle they allow) to show all four feet offset (not square) so all four feet are visible. Then one from the front with to show from ears to feet, and a butt shot to show from tail to feet.

Also with the above, the pics have to be 4X6 in size with the horse being 80% of the photo...

I just got the registration pics back on the colt we bought and I have to say that they definitely need to change how they're scanning and resizing the pics to put on the paperwork

.. His came back horrible

The scanned pics look nothing like the ones we sent and make him look like he's 6 feet long and about a foot tall because they compressed them so much.. Don't under stand why they can't do like AMHA did/does with putting the best of the two pics we send directly onto the papers instead of scanning them..

AMHR is very picky about pictures, more so I think than AMHA. They sent back several of my foal pics this year with instructions that no other horse be in the picture ( was only part of the mare behind the foal).

But yes, they require all body parts in all pictures LOL. All four feet showing, etc.

Thanks for this post

I thought all transfers needed new pictures, glad to pass the word along to people

who bought new horses this year as long as new style papers you don't have to

Thanks for your help. I didn't get to pick up the pictures today..will do it first thing in the morning. I sure hope they came out and that all the parts are in each picture..lol!

In addition to the 4x6 photos, AMHR also accepts 3x5. And, I have heard a lot of people complain about the new style papers regarding the scanned images not being to proportion, however, the ones I've gotten so far (four sets) have all been proper to proportion and color.

Here's an example of what they look like for those who have not seen the new style certificate. I think they are attractive.

Okay, I am confused....

So, You DO NOT NEED photos with transfers ONLY ? If they already have the NEW AMHR papers? I think AMHR needs to redo their Work Order then. This is confusing...

I have reread the Work Order & The Sheet they send now with the Photo Requirements and it clearly states on both that photos are required FOR ALL WORK being done? So, this is very confusing and I myself have a few here that already have new papers and was going to wait until Spring because they are so hairy.

They just need Tranfered into my name.

Apparantly, transfers of horses that have NEW STYLE PAPERS with PICTURES don't need new pictures with each transfer. I'm glad to know that now and I won't send new pics in with subsequent transfers (unless they don't have papers with pictures).

I registered 6 or 7 new foals this year and I had no problems with the pictures at all. The requirements for pictures are really quite simple and I have no distortion on the papers.

The computer program I use to print pictures doesn't make them the exact size as stated on the Picture Requirement sheet, but somewhere inbetween and they have been accepted and not distorted when printed out.

AMHR apparently changes their rules as they go along as I have sent in foal pictures with their dam in the background and they said nothing at all and printed them on the papers. Its really hard to keep up with what they want.

Also, I had to do a stallion to gelding on my colt and they said I did NOT need pictures for that either. I got his papers back in under two weeks... just got them back yesterday in fact. I thought that was pretty excellent being end of year and all.

I just got my transferred papers back today on Blue and Bomb Shell, along with my new membership and ammy cards. AMHR has always given me outstanding service!
