The attacks on Palin have ranged from patronizing to vicious to fantastical. She has been caricatured as an inexperienced rube, a baby-making automaton, an uneducated underachiever, a bad mother, trailer-park trash, a rightwing religious fanatic, a sexual fantasy, and of course, a fascist. No subject has been deemed taboo in the effort to take Palin down.

What her detractors don't seem to realize is that in the process of insulting Palin, they are insulting the majority of the country. If being a self-made success story, a working mother, a church-going member of a small-town community, and a believer in moderate to conservative political viewpoints disqualifies Palin, what does that say about mainstream America? The inherent condescension at the heart of the anti-Palin campaign is coming across loud and clear and it may actually be boosting her popularity

I normally don't post on anything having to do with politics but for several years now I feel voting is picking the lesser of two evils instead of the best person for the job. As for the trash ads, maybe more people would look at any politician in a better light if they took more time in telling why they are better for the job then why the other isn't. I am one that sees no value in trashing anyones private life for political gain, thats goes for either side. I don't care if Obama's mother was unwed when he was born, so was I when my daughter was born. And I don't care if Palin's daughter is pregnant at 17, thats a family issue not a world issue.

So how about they all just start telling us what they can do to make our lives better instead of telling us each others life is a mess. I want a President that I don't feel is the lesser of two evils anymore.

AMEN sister!

When I watch a speech by any candidate, I want to hear HOW they are going to change our lives for the better, period, not the same speech, over and over and over, slamming each other and telling half truths and outright lies....it's insulting for them to think we won't check the FACTS and realize they are treating us like idiots! This goes for ALL of the candidates folks, not just the ones I disagree with

I do think there is a lot of trash being said but it isn't just about one it is about all of them. I may notice this more because I am an Independent. I do have to take seriously what one of their own has to say about a particular canidate such as the one this morning on the news. I think both parties have done a poor job of picking up on someone worthy of being president but we o have end up with which is worse of the two eveils. JMHO

WASHINGTON - Nebraska Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel said his party's vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, lacks foreign policy experience and called it a "stretch" to say she's qualified to be president.

"She doesn't have any foreign policy credentials," Hagel said in an interview published Thursday by the Omaha World-Herald. "You get a passport for the first time in your life last year? I mean, I don't know what you can say. You can't say anything."

Could Palin lead the country if GOP presidential nominee John McCain could not?

"I think it's a stretch to, in any way, to say that she's got the experience to be president of the United States," Hagel said.

McCain and other Republicans have defended Palin's qualifications, citing Alaska's proximity to Russia. Palin told ABC News, "They're our next-door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska."

Hagel took issue with that argument. "I think they ought to be just honest about it and stop the nonsense about, 'I look out my window and I see Russia and so therefore I know something about Russia,'" he said. "That kind of thing is insulting to the American people."

Hagel, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has been a vocal critic of the Bush administration since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

In July, Hagel traveled to Iraq and Afghanistan with Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. Though he didn't expect to be asked, Hagel had said he would have considered serving as Obama's running mate.

Palin was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, population 6,500, before becoming Alaska's governor in December 2006.

Palin visited soldiers in Kuwait and Germany last year and said in an interview with ABC News that her only other foreign travel had been to Mexico and Canada. She also said she had never met a foreign head of state.

Hagel told the newspaper that other governors have been elected to serve in the White House without experience in Washington. He said judgment and character were also important for the job.

"But I do think in a world that is so complicated, so interconnected and so combustible, you really got to have some people in charge that have some sense of the bigger scope of the world," Hagel said. "I think that's just a requirement."

Top Clinton fundraiser backs McCain over Obama

Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. greets supporters at the conclusion of a campaign rally in Tampa, Fla., Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008.

WASHINGTON --A top Hillary Rodham Clinton fundraiser threw her support behind Republican John McCain on Wednesday, saying he will lead the country in a centrist fashion and accusing the Democrats of becoming too extreme.

"I believe that Barack Obama, with MoveOn.org and Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean, has taken the Democratic Party - and they will continue to - too far to the left," Lynn Forester de Rothschild said. "I'm not comfortable there."

Rothschild is also a member of the Democratic National Committee's Platform Committee. She said she would be stepping down from her position on the committee but will not switch political parties.

Clinton spokeswoman Kathleen Strand said in an e-mail that the New York senator disagrees with Rothschild's decision to endorse McCain.

"Senator Clinton has been criss-crossing the country and doing whatever she can to make the very clear case that the Obama-Biden ticket represents the new ideas and positive change we need right now, and the McCain-Palin ticket does not," Strand said in the e-mail.

Rothschild said she was excited by the prospect of a woman being in the White House, even though she and Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin disagree on issues. The Alaska governor opposes abortion except in the case of a threat to the mother's life. Rothschild said she supports abortion rights.

"I believe that the McCain-Palin government will be a centrist government," Rothschild said. "It's not going to be an ideological government."

Rothschild is a member of the DNC's Democrats Abroad chapter and splits her time living in London and New York. She was one of Clinton's top fundraisers, bringing in more than $100,000 for her presidential campaign. She built a multimillion-dollar telecommunications company before marrying international banker Sir Evelyn de Rothschild.

Rothschild said she has not discussed her support for McCain with Clinton.

"I'm sure she is not pleased with what I'm doing today," she said. "But you know what? I have to do what I believe in."

Palin rocks!! And I have yahoo email.

Lisa I could be wrong as I have not heard more on the news as of yet today but from what I heard this morning it was not being disputed in any way.

Littlesteppers I realize you want to believe there is people name calling since it can be a great distraction however I have not seen any name calling on this thread so not sure where you are reading it

Lisa, Palin didn't have anything in her emails except an email from a friend telling her she would pray for her family because of how the press has been treating them. Even though they could not find anything the hacker passed that email along and it was placed on a web site. Do we all not think our emails should be private? I guess if you happen to be a woman who is republican and running for VP then you aren't allowed to have email?? But she did have her contacts on there.

Anyone here remember the mud slinging about Ronald Reagan?

"Movie Star has no business in politics?"

Well I happen to think he turned out to be one of our best presidents ever.

I just think that mud slinging is just a part of campaigning that is a given. Be it right or wrong, I suppose it just goes with the territory and the closer we come to election day the worse its going to get.

Last time I checked she is running for Vice President not President. So why is the left so scared????

For Heavens sake you'd think McCain had one foot in the grave the way they keep talking about Palin being President. The way everybody's talking and speculating he evidently isn't expected to last much past the election. As far as the mud-slinging getting worse is concerned.....I don't see how it could.

Actually, you hit the nail SO on the head. A "white woman and a bi-racial (sorry he's as much white as black) man" running...we should be ashamed of ourselves that it hasn't happened years ago. But, that said, having spent half my life in Europe, we are very backwards in many ways. I'm NOT knocking America - believe me - I'm SOOOOOOO proud to be American and wouldn't live anywhere else but that said, I noticed a huge difference in how minorities and women are treated here compared to other Western nations.

I truly feel that this is THE most important election in the history of our nation. Not just that we are in devastating financial troubles. Pretty soon China will own half of some of our largest investment/banking companies ! But - seriously - for the continuance of mankind. Russia has announced this week that they are going to sell arms to Iran. Iran has promised to wipe Israel off the map and hates the USA. Russia is backing them and our relationship with Russia is going downhill fast, look at Georgia and who the Russians blamed for it !!!! Both Russia and the USA have the power to destroy life on earth - totally. SO who do we want in office? Someone who won't back down like McCain...well yes that shows other countries that we won't be bullied but what if that attitude gets us into a war we can't get out of...Or do we need some one less likely to go to war and find we're dragged into one because we're seen as weak and we're attacked. Anyone not seeing that WWIII is round the corner if things aren't handled correctly is hiding their heads in the sand.

Voting in this election is going to take every one of us seriously putting the way we've always voted on the back burner and vote based on bigger issues. This goes wayyyyyy beyond getting a black man or white woman elected. We need the RIGHT person elected and with such huge issues on the world table this time, I'm honestly not sure who that is yet.
