We have a red/blonde chow chow named Bryson and I wondered if anyone else on the forum likes chow chows?

They are such sweet dogs, very loving, yes protective of its family but we like that! Its nice to have a dog that can scare someone or something with its bark!!

He really wouldnt hurt a flea, well unless it was hurting us first, but he comes off as loud and scary!!

Anyway we had a black chow chow for 14 years ( Madison) and he was also the sweetest boy around! I was so sad when I had to put him down last April, then we got another to love.

We thought about getting a different breed but so love the chow chow that we couldnt resist..

I hope some of you others like chow Chows too...

My family had a Chow for a while when I was growing up. We came home to a burglarized home one day and she was sitting on the couch looking so proud that she had let some nice men in to take our stuff.

I've since groomed a few Chows, and admire the show quality ones, but only from a distance as their coats are not anything I'd want to maintain. They are beautiful, though, and unique.

I am a chow fan. Currently I have a bit over a year black bi_tch who I was showing some. My first dog when I moved out on my own (20 yrs ago
default_rolleyes.gif
) was a red chow who came with the room I rented she was with me for 15 yrs. I had a cream bit_ch who I got as a puppy from a pet store I worked in when she almost died from corona. I also had a blue retired brood/show bit_ch She was the best and we miss her soo much, lost her to stomach cancer at 9-10. I also fostered one of her daughters. I have done some chow rescue and evaluation. I actually have never owned a male though

After much study and working with a couple mentors I have decided I will probably not breed chows ever, way too many health issues. I will likely always have at least 1 in my family but my long range goal is to show/breed a smaller lower coat maintenance breed.

We also have a St. poodle, australian shepherd and german shepherd.

Mininik that totally sounds like our blue girl.....she loved visitors and friends....I mean wasn't everyone coming just to see her and for the record her name was Deva and she lived up to it

Bryson is 17 months old, sounds like close to your girl... Once I figure out how to do pic I will put a picture of Bryson on here...

With our black show Madison, when he was 12 we left for 1 hour to go to open house at my kids school and when we came back he was laying there crying and his belly was huge like. I called the University Of Missouri vet school ( only place to get in a hurry anytime) they said bring him in immediately or he will die!!

So we fly in and they tell us he has a stomach tursion, its where their stomach flips inside their body. It can happen to any big dog that maybe eats or drinks fast and then jumps or runs around.. Madison was not a dog to do those things, he was an inside dog, spoiled rotten and layed around most of the time as chows will do..

They said it is $1000 deposit to even go into surgery, so of course I say do you take Visa?? As soon as I signed the form they rushed him into surgery for a couple hours I think ( I was sobbing so cant remember it seemed like forever) they told us straight out there were no guarantees of what they might find once they were inside Madison. Could have cancer , etc.. Me more sobbing!! he could still die! More sobbing...

They finally come out and say he did great, his insides were that of a younger dog and they unwould his stomach and tacked it up so it couldnt happen again...

He lived 2 more years after that, but i have to say I had never heard of such a thing and it was a horrible experience!!

So watch your big dogs so they dont eat or drink and then jump up on a dog house or run around fast...

Also I have only had boy chows, I have friends who had girls and they were very bi-chy!! Have had lots of love and affection from my boys but I think it is in how you raise them... Some people think chows are mean, well only if they are raised to be, or have been abused, I mean they have to have a defense...

Bummer on the torsion/bloat.....it's great that he survived, many do not. Chows are actually quite prone to torsion.

They are great dogs especially if you like cats

that is one of the breeds harder features for so many is chows do not normally act like dogs. I love the wool bears, but they are not for everyone and becoming harder to keep.......many insurance companies ban them and some cities do as well.

I will try to locate some pic's and upload them to post. I don't have many pics on the computer of the dogs other than the current dogs.

default_wink.png

And lucky you he has transitional coat which looks like more adult than puppy......we still have mostly puppy coat and it so sucks
default_gaah.gif

My son has a black chow name Junior he is almost 9 and is for the most part an outside dog by his choice. He just loves to play ball and will drive everyone crazy if his ball ends up out of his reach he has been a great dog for them he is black black and more black.

OK I managed to find a few not so great photo's in the computer
default_rolleyes.gif

First the chow that started it all......Ciao....yes I know unique name
default_new_rofl.gif

She was 13ish in this picture and I believe it was right after she had her eyes removed due to glaucoma

Then came Deva.....and she loved the snow....one time she was out and it snowed hard and I went out to get her and she must have had 6 inches piled on her just snoozing away on the deck

cd%20pics%20737.jpg

Then Deva's daughter Sherri came to stay for a while........Deva wanted to murder her so we had to play musical doggies. Sherri was convinced she was a golden retriever...super friendly, loved to play...even played fetch which is less common in chows...she was a doll face and found a great permanent home.

cd%20pics%20735.jpg

and now we have Ruby, screwy mc doo, scooby doo, and a few other less nice names

Those are cute pics!!

Both our chows always love snow too!!

Last winter we got 16inches and Bryson was just 5 months old, the snow was so deep my husband had to walk thru the yard making him a trail to walk thru.

Byrson wouldnt come inside and he had snowballs stuck to his mane!h

Here is our other chow that passed- Madison

My son has a black chow name Junior he is almost 9 and is for the most part an outside dog by his choice. He just loves to play ball and will drive everyone crazy if his ball ends up out of his reach he has been a great dog for them he is black black and more black.

Bryson loves to play ball too. We have a mini soccer ball and he runs and kicks it and then picks it up in his mouth and tosses it in the air- so cute and fun to watch!!

I have a black chow, he is so gentle, he is 8 years old. looks like a black bear.

Dont you just love them? Our first was black, so after he died we decided to get a red one, the breeder told us it would be best if they were different colors so you didnt compare each of them, but of course we still compare them all the time!!

Madison was so calm and loving, where as Bryson is too but he is so full of energy!! He has way more than Madison ever had!

Love that they look like bears!

It is cold here and Bryson loves to just lay out in the cold, with those fur coats they have, its no wonder...

I have never had one, but did meet someone that had one. Loved the dog. I have always wanted one, but somebody tells me 4 dogs is to many..........
default_rolleyes.gif

LOL Ashley! We said four dogs was too many... two dogs ago now.
default_wacko.png
Three of those dogs were NOT planned additions, just a couple strays and one saved from death row.
default_wub.png

I do tend to agree that 4 indoor dogs is alot. I would love to get a out door dog thou. Maybe not until Bella is a little older.

My cocker is the only one that loves to be outside and can handle the cold. But with her soar leg she is not a happy camping kennel bout dog right now. However as much as she hates it, she has improved alot with it.

Ok I am practcing pix so here are more of Bryson...
