ATTS... Heard of this Dog test?

Well, since I couldn't come here during my break, I was searching for that perfect guardian all around bree of dog I want for our ranch. I've decided on the Anatolian Shephard :aktion033: I am amazed at their attentivness, and versitility in reguards to what they will diligently care for. I am hoping to find one that is healthy sound, great personality and if I am fortunate to have all that AND pick the color, I am hoping to find a red with a full black mask and black points

Well, I kind of got off track in a way, but it was during that search that I located "ATTS" American Temperment Test Society Web Site. It is a great site to go to if you are interested in learning the rating of a particular breed's tempermant. It will list how many dogs of that particular breed has been tested, how many passed, how many failed and what the percentage is on the overall temperment.

I think it is a great idea for dogs to go through this. I was a little concerned with how many have actually gone through this test (not many, considering the overall dog population), but maybe it is a fairly new test? I think that this test should be offered in more areas than it already is, but then again, if it is fairly new, I can understand.

So, if you are interested in your dogs breed overall tempermant rating or one that you may be considering, have a look!

The Anatolian Shephard Dog's score is 80.8%

(which is in the upper average over all the breeds.)

There are several links you can click on for information, details, etc. I haven't had time to look through it all yet. But go to breed statistics and find the alphabetical order for dog of interest.

that is a very interesting and useful thing - for purebreds... however speaking from experience, as we have had mostly mutts, i'm guessing it won't really work for them? even if you DO know what kind of mix your mutt is, putting more than one breed together seems like it would "muddy the waters" so to speak. however if i were looking for a purebred dog for a specific purpose, this would seem to come in very handy!

Actually, if you read the actual test it's testing for quite a few things. Unbrellas opening toward the dog, shots fired, strange threatening people coming toward them. Some breeds are going to do better in some areas than others. Of course you will find that a lot of people actually prepare for this test so you are probably going to see higher pass rates than a test that cannot be prepared for.

They also take breed purpose and training in to consideration. A guardian breed such as an Anatolian or a Schutzhund trained dog might be allowed to be aggressive toward the menacing stranger because they are after all bred and/or trained to protect whereas a Golden or Lab wouldn't be allowed to do so.

Well, my favored breed, the Shetland Sheepdog, is at 67.3%. I'm not really surprised since mine is deathly afraid of gunshots and sometimes other noises and loves to bark. I love him just the same, and I grew up with a couple other shelties too and loved them also.

With all the contoversy about Pit Bulls all the time, I was surprised that they are at 84.2%. And there's a WIDE range of numbers of the dogs in a breed that are tested. Well over 2,000 German Shepards and only a few of some other breeds. Guess the numbers might reflect popularity of the breed (at least in and around the testing area).(?)
