An oil refinery, about ten miles from me as the crow flies, just blew up!! I was sitting here talking to Debs and I was banging on about the sky going grey- DUH!! It's NOT "snow clouds" it's SMOKE!!!! Made the whole world dull for over an hour, shook the ground, people thought it was an earthquake (YES we do get them
biggrin.gif
) Buckled front doors, windows smashed. That bit did not reach me but I had wondered what the noise was- we do get quite a lot of it around here, the IRA blew up the rial track at the back of me twenty years ago, there was bomb in St Albans station on July7th when they blew up London- two of them came from Luton which is two stops up the line. I am a mile from the station and 1/4 mile from the track!!

People are dead, obviously, but the pollution is the ongoing problem- they cannot get the fire under control and until they do the day will continue dull!!!

This is what it must have been like after Pompeii erupted!!!

OMG Jane!

Yes, I'm beginning to like the idea, more and more. Even with the snow!!! I am in the middle of Nuclear Winter now, the whole of the London skyline is completely blacked out- it is dark I have all the lights on and the smell is noticeable.

I was woken by the noise but I'm back on the Diazepam for my back, so I was too sleepy to care!! About 5.50am if my alarm clock is right. I thought nothing of it as we do get our fair share or terrorist attacks on the mainline rail track 1/4 mile from me. Hemel Hempstead is about ten miles from me on the road and about five maybe overland. The depot that has gone up, however, is literally ten minutes drive, I have been past it many many times- it is right by the main London Orbital road, the M25, and the main northern highway the M1- I have NO idea why they put it there, even before either Motorway was built this area was never what you would call secluded!! Anyway, it's not there anymore so I guess the problem has solved itself.!!

Sure Vic. I can only imagine the gossip I'd have with me and Jane and Vic here in the hollow!

Yikes!!!! Jane you better get on a plane and get over to this side of the world!!! Much closer for me to stuff some Christmas down ya! hee hee

Well, I'm certainly living under a cloud now!!! That big plume of nasty black smoke?? Right in the middle of it you will see a Hobbit shaking her fist at it all!!

They are still saying it was an accident but an expert on this sort of disaster has been on saying it is almost impossible to actually set fire to this sort of fuel- mainly aviation fuel - it does actually take and explosion, then it explodes and then it catches fire. This close to Christmas, potentially closing two of London's main airports, and it's an accident??? I don't think so!!

The smoke is not anywhere near the horses, the wind is blowing in the wrong direction. Thank goodness.

Oh whew! That is what I was worried about, good to know they aren't breathing that black smoke.

Stay safe Fizz!

hey why not come to New Hampshire? I can guarantee 20 below very soon, llots of snow and lots of skidding on the ice! Now how can you pass up all that fun!

No explosions unless i fall down tho.

Should I tell the geldings to move over and get ready for company?

I've just heard five more explosions, and the air is quite "greasy"- obviously all windows closed as it is sub zero- Can't see whats going on and the News has not picked it up yet.

Doggone it Jane, I hate this worrying about you! The hollow is cold but not too snowy. Pack em up and we'll figure it out. I'll love the dobergirls and all.

Jane,

All that black air CANNOT be good for your lungs or your horses! How long do they think it will take to clear out????

BTW, the air out here in Central Oregon is crystal clear.......COLD, but clear. You are welcome to join us!

Three to four days to clear- they have only just now- well as of midnight tonight, started fighting the fire- it was too dangerous until the last container went up. No-one has been killed (Thank GOD) and, as the coordinating Fire Chief said , he wished to keep it that way!!

All schools in the area will be closed and the Motorways involved (M1 and M25) will also be closed for at least another day- possibly more.

All the plans were in place and everything went very smoothly, with everyone evacuated without panic or problem. I feel for the people whose houses are all but demolished this close to Christmas.

BUT as someone pointed out, had it been Monday morning instead of Sunday, there would have been many deaths.

Short of going and staying in the caravan, which I do not really fancy in sub zero temperatures, there is little I can do.
