Bought Foalproof

I am thoroughly disgusted with my three mares. I thought I would be weaning by now - well close to it. Anyway, I bought foalproof. Is there a site to show how to draw blood. My girlfriend's sister is a vet tech but hasn't done horses. Which of us would be better trying this?

While I appreciate your dispair, I would STRONGLY suggest that you take your mares to the vet and have them draw blood. I will probably cost only a very small amount. You can take the blood home and do the testing per directions in the kit.

If you do not know HOW to draw blood, it could be deadly for your animal should you push air in while attempting to draw blood out....assuming that you were good enough (and the horses stood still) for you to hit the correct vein. If this is your choice to do it at home, then the best choice would be the vet tech. Maybe she hasn't done horses but she does understand the procedures that are necessary and precautions to use.

You can use this test without drawing blood - though it's only good from 40-100 days. You just prick some skin and get a few drops. Pregnamare. I have used it at is was 100% accurate for me.

That's exactly why I won't use that test. I will give shots...but draw the line at drawing blood. Heck, even my own vets have trouble at times, drawing blood for coggins from my little ones....they jump around so much. I use Pregnamare instead, where all I have to do is get a few drops of blood from a lancet prick.

PLEASE, drawing blood should be left to a qualified person!

Thanks for the advice; I was looking all over on the Internet and couldn't find anything. I will let the vet tech try. When I have gotten coggins the vet seemed to be able to find the veins and the horses weren't pleased but seemed to be ok. If that doesn't work I will trailer them to the vet. I should have used pregnamare last summer but since I was 99% sure he covered them I didn't bother; another lesson learned.
