Last night at 2:22 Brandy started barking. I love this dog because she has distinct different barks for different things. This was her "You better just turn around and leave" bark. She does sleep in the house. Then I hear some tapping on the front door window. We have motion lights so the light was on outside. There were 2 Hispanic men one about 30-40 and the other was in his 20's. He told me to open the door. I said no. Brandy was still barking and if nothing is wrong she stops barking when I check out her concern. When I wouldn't open the door to let him in then he wanted the phone. It was the older guy that did the talking. When I refused the phone he grabbed the younger guy by the coat and pulled him off the porch. we also have a sliding glass door in the front in addition to the regular front door and they headed for that door but the light went on and they took off. I wasn't sure they were gone so I did call the police. Now remember they came to the door at 2:22am. Before 2:30am the police were here and looking for the guys. Wednesday night she did the same kind of barking out back. I let her out the back door and she wanted into the horse pens. I went out and opened the gate and she hit the back fence. Then she got real quiet and came back to the house. I really love that she is not a barker and doesn't bark for hours on end for no reason. She has different barks just like a baby has different crys. She also has an indoor voice bark that cracks me up.

What concerned me about the two men last night was that 1) there was no car visible. 2) we live in the middle of the block. if they broke down on the main road why would they walk past 12 houses (6 on each side) to get to mine? 3) why would they go to the other door after I wouldn't let them in the front door? 4) how did they disappear so fast when the police showed up when they do not live on this road? 5) they had to be hiding for that couple of hours the police drove up and down the road shining there search lights.

I love that I have this dog. She is better than a gun. I think if they would have broken in she would have done them harm. She isn't even quite a year yet.

I am so glad to hear you are safe. Your lucky to have your dog. I know what you mean by differant barks for differant situations.. we have 4 house dogs, a lab and 3 standard poodles. 2 of the poodles just turned 1 yr old and are learnig so good from our lab and when to bark at what and what kind of bark. Our other poodles he just barks his deep bark. In todays world a good "security" dog is worth there weight in gold, and most of the times its not the size/breed of the dog its the bark that will scare someone off. It sounds to me like they were hiding also. Take extra caution when you go out to your horses and be careful. Lotta "crazys" out there. Give Brandy a extra hug and treat for protecting her Mom.

That is frightening!

It seems that your Brandy is worth her weight in gold!

I understand about recognizing her different barks. We have learned our dogs' too.

How scary

Thank goodness for your canine security system!!! do be careful.

OMG!!!! That was pretty scary!!! Good for Brandy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am sure she was a BIG deterant in those guys deciding to leave! Does your house sit back more off the road? Harder to see from a neighbors place? Some reason why they would pick yours over another that maybe you just haven't noticed? Does your front door sit back in or something- or a lot of shrubs, where someone else would not see they were there?! I am SURE they did NOT want to just use the phone and if the police showed up, and I was broke down, I would be GLAD that help was there, I would not be hiding somewhere. It concerns me that they were not caught though, and could be back. Make sure you let all your neighbors know so they are aware and harm does not come to anyone!!

My one dog has different barks for many different things..... LOL I can tell if someone is riding a bike up the road or walking a dog up the road. (He HATES bikes) He also would not tolerate someone's foolish behavior. The dog I used to have proved himself to me once that he would be there for me no matter what. Dogs are great, aren't they?

I am sure glad you are ok, I truly think that was a close call!! Give Brandy a BIG hug and an extra treat!! What a good girl!

Well, last night about 11:30pm my brother decided Jessie had to go home. I guess that was OK because she was having some nightmares about it. In her sleep she said "No, my friend would not Rape and kill me" I guess it bothered her more than we thought. We are getting some pepper spray to keep by the front door. Last night I put a can of Raid by the door just in case. Hopefully they caught sight of how big Brandy is and won't be back. My house is not back from the road or tree/bush covered any more than anyone else's. Our house is kind of "L" shaped and while the house faces South the front door faces east and the sliding glass door that is also on the front of the house on the other side of the "L" faces south. I don't know why they would pick our house other than we are the only house on the street that has 2 older women in it. My mom is 74 and I am not. Anyway, I am hopeing that the dog was a deturant. And yes the police were here fast enough that if they were looking for a phone the police would have found them. The police came around a few times last night too. What is wrong with people?

OMG, just DONT open the door!!! Dont think that pepper spray will even help if there are two of them either! You have to be pretty close to use it I imagine..... I think you did right by just keeping the door locked, having the dog there and calling the cops. If they come back I would tell them that you have ALREADY called the cops (even if you havent) and that you have a gun (even if you dont) and they need to not come back! How scary!!

Keep your dog close!! If they know it's just you and your Mom, they have been watching the place then!! Cripes! Even during the daytime, I would make SURE your doors are always locked, especially if your Mom is home alone!!! Make sure she always has the phone within easy reach! I sure hope they dont come back EVER!!

A suggestion for protection.....WASP spray. It shoots a straight stream, it will shoot up to 25' away and you get multiple uses out of a can. You don't get the usual blowback as you do from MACE or pepper spray. It does as much damage or more than your typical pepper spray or Mace. It's cheaper too!

Goooood dog.

We've always had medium-sized dogs but believe me, when our cattle dog stood security nobody, but NOBODY, was going to break into that house!

She would bark so hard she stood on her hind legs with a deep vicious-sounding growl and her hackles all on end. If you didn't know her you would have thought she was going to rip your throat out. That dog passed away last year and we didn't expect our new Sheltie puppy to be much for security as they aren't a particularly protective breed, but I think she must be getting instructions from our last dog.

She grumbles and mumbles and talks all the time to strangers and she definitely has an "alarm back" versus her recognition bark or excitement bark.
