I've read on several posts that people will measure the cannon bone and predict how tall the foal will mature to. Is this an accurate way to determine height? My filly, 5 1/2 weeks old, has short stubby legs and stocky body (quarter horse style) and my colt 2 weeks old has legs a mile long and a very small petite body. They are both the same 22-23" right now! Both Mares are 32" and Both Sires are 29". Any predictions here???

There simply is no fool proof absolutes in predicting adult height. But the methods of measuring and thereby having a really good guess have developed pretty well. I like a combination of twol methods to see if they both 'agree' and then figure it's as close to accurate as possible. I use the cannon bone measurement, I use the birth height minus the height at three months added to the three month height.

Thank you! I just want to try these methods and see what happens!

Well I've had really bad luck with the cannon bone measurement.

My filly who is now a 2 year old, according to cannon bone measurement, should have matured at 31 inches. She is 33 inches at 2 years old and she's been that tall for almost a year now.

A colt who was supposed to mature to 31.5 or so is now 2 years old and is 33.25 and has been for almost a year.

A colt who was supposed to be right around 34 inch mark mature, is now 2 years old and he is 31.75 and has been for almost a year.

Does it matter which age you do the cannon bone measurements?

I thought that I read somewhere to do the cannon bone measurement when they are 3 months old. Could be wrong. I usually just use the ht. chart. Every now and then you will get thoses that don't follow the chart.

I use the birth height minus the height at three months added to the three month height.

I`d like to try this but am a bit confused....

: how can you minus the height at 3mths from the birth height.....wouldnt the height at 3mths be more??? Also by using these two methods, have you had much success and at what age do you also measure the cannon bone??

thanks a lot.
