I know that many, many of you use Carl for all your dental needs for your minis. As I mentioned before I am one of the plaintiffs that are suing the Texas State Board of Veterinary Examiners which sent a "cease and desist" letter to several equine dental people in February and another later in the year. We went to court today to try to get an injunction to keep them from being fined $1,000 per day if they continued to practice their profession in Texas. The board said that they would not enforce the fines and that they could keep practicing, but we still hoped for an injunction to make certain that was the case. We lost because the judge said that the requirements of the Cease and Desist letter were too broad.

We need your help NOW, please. We need people who use Carl or any "non-veterinarian" for your horses to write the head of the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. We need to flood his email and fax and mailbox with protests, LOUD AND LONG. Otherwise, you may not have any choice in choosing the best treatment for your horses. You will be limited to Veterinarians. I have checked with six that I use and NONE of them are interested in taking over Carl's place with my 275 head!!!

Time is short, so please don't put it off. We next have a hearing with the Board on October 30, just two weeks away. If we are complacent, our choices may be made for us, and I, for one, do not want to see that happen. I don't have my teeth worked on by my physician, and I don't want my horses worked on by anyone less skilled that what I now have.

At one of the breaks the head of the Board told me, "If Carl is so great, why don't you just hire him full time as an employee, then he can legally do your teeth." I told him that I only need him two times a year, but that shows the mentality that we are dealing with. The Institute for Justice is handling the case and calling it, "Challenging Texas' Elitist Veterinary Cartel." Most of the vets that I have talked to actually refer their patients to various Dental Practitioners because they don't want to bother with treatment themselves. Most have not been trained in dentistry, but many that have been have been trained by non-vet dental practitioners!

I know many of you have written before, and many of you several times, but those letters don't count now. We need a NEW FLOOD to hit the State Capitol!

Please contact Dewey E. Helmcamp III, J.D., Executive Director, Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners to express you concerns.

Tony,

Will it help even coming from someone outside of TX or are you only needing locals at this time? I'd be happy to email/fax/whatever. I've used Carl and I've also used my vet. And guess what? When I used my vet, they sent the radiographs to Carl for guidance! And I use an equine-only center, not a typical local vet that does dogs, cats, hamsters and just happens to do horses also.

Let me know.

Thanks, Parmela

I just sent my email... It was a long one......I hope it will help to keep these denists practicing, the Miniature Horse and the Shetland truly need help.

I did the same....I told them how important it is for our breed....and like Angie said..."it was a long email"....but I had to tell them how important it is...and how hard it is to find a vet WILLING to work on a miniatures mouth....and one that has the tools to do the job as well.

I appreciate your help. I would love to have copies if you don't mind and it is convenient. I think that it doesn't really matter where you live at this point. If it is successful here, it may spread to your state in the near future.

They did it to us up here in Ontario

At first they were fining and confiscating their tools if they were caught practising. Now they are allowing them to practise under a vet's supervision - so if you want them you pay for them and an attending veterinarian

: Most of the vets around here are NOT good at teeth because they do them so rarely compared to a dental practitioner. I am with you - I don't go to the doctor to have MY teeth looked at and I would far rather have a specialist do my horses teeth.

Yet another letter sent to Mr Helmcamp.

Emails do not have the same affect that mailed letters do. Texans should also send a copy of their letters to their state representatives. If they get lots of mail, they too will be inquiring of the court about why they are messing with business this way.

Thanks, Libby, for the information. It is good to know.

For what it's worth, I emailed in support. I was lucky enough to have Carl work on my horse at Natls and he can MOVE to Wisconsin any time he wants if Texas doesn't want him. He was EXCELLANT with my horse. He worked on my stallion without any sedation (shocker there was that all the vets around here insist on using it) and the horse was fine - better than fine after he was done!

Carl just called me and asked me to mention to those of you out of Texas that you should keep in mind that AMHA is headquartered in Texas and our World Show is held here annually and Texas has the largest number of miniature horses and breeders anywhere, so it affects you, too. The more support the better, so we both thank all of you.

Here are two Equine Dentists I know... though Mary used to be my normal Vet for my sheep.

http://www.nwequinedentistry.com/

There is another Equine Dentist I used.. Liz has too. My computer tanked that had his info on it. Maybe if you contact Liz at Raftered Hearts..she will still have his contact number.

Because if they are doing that to you in your state...how long will it take other states to follow through?

Which scares me because the Vet I use now... who I like...still can't do horse's teeth worth a hoot. Rather use the very good equine Dentist I have used in the past.

Sent my letter Tony!

: Will forward a copy to you as well.

This whole thing has me extremely upset!

Don't know what I'd do if I didn't have Carl (or any other Mini Equine Dentist) to work on my Mini's teeth.

Having worked in a legislative office for many years, I can tell you from first hand experience that emails usually get screened by a staffer, and if they don't recognize the name as a constituent, get deleted (they get HUNDREDS of emails a day and most never even get opened). Send a "real" letter if you want it to get read. If you use an email service like Yahoo or Hotmail, I can almost guarantee it will be deleted and never read.

SENT MINE IN AND WILL MAIL IT ALSO. LOOKS LIKE SINCE THEY HAVE TO APPEAR OCTOBER 30, CARL STILL WON'T MAKE IT TO INDIANA YET.

Yes....now I know why I haven't heard back from Carl.

: I passed up seeing him when he was here in August, because he told me he was coming back to Ohio "in the Fall". So.....I was getting worried! Guess he has to take care of the idiots at the State Board first.

This very second Im having a writing block, probably because Im still stressed from work, but I plan on writing a letter this eveningwhen I have the time and patience. This is completely ubsurd, especially when most vets will refer, you to an equine dentist. I had my big horse done in march by a vet because at the time I couldnt get a dentist out in a decent amount of time, and now I wish I would have just waited, because her teeth didnt look any better when the vet was done.
