Our JRT pups are four and a half weeks old now. Their little claws are getting pretty long and catching on everything, even in their own hair and skin. Ouch! Should I clip them and, if so, what's the best way to do it? Are my own nail clippers better suited than the dog ones?

I always use the bigger "people nail clippers" on puppies. IMO they are easier to maneuver around tiny puppy toes and tend to be less frightening to the puppies, too.

By all means, go ahead and clip them. Make sure you have a styptic pencil on hand in case you nick a quick, its pretty easy with the tiny puppys but it is not the end of the world if you do! Our vet said even regular baking flour will work in a pinch, but I'd rather use something deigned to stop bleeding because it works so much faster. The earlier you start clipping, the easier it will be down the road.

: We started playing with our pups feet from the first time they were held, and clipped nails early too, and they were all super easy to do before they went to their new homes... or at least as "super easy" as anything is to do with an active puppy.

absolutely! I start clipping my pups toe nails around 1.5-2 weeks old. they grow SOOO fast and i usually clip at least once a week..sometimes more. I find they dig up the mother pretty badly if you don't keep ontop of them and all i can think is OUCH and feel bad for the mother. I prefere human fingernail clippers because their toe nails are soo tiny then they are much easier to use.

I use the people nail clippers on everyone here too.... start the babies at about a month. corgi babies are notorious for hating toenails..... we had JRT puppies years ago that when we started them right away they were good later in life. My Dachsy Annie will lay on her back in my lap upside down while I do hers.... her mom before me obviously did it on the pups when small.... hope the older Dachs that are coming will be as patient! lol

I use human toenail clippers, the size you would use for a baby. I clip puppies once a week from the time they are one week old.

Thanks for all your input. I appreciate it.
