There is a farm not too far from us that is cloning horses for $165,000.

That sure is a lot of money, and there are many wonderful horses in the world.but....

BESIDES your own favorite most loved MINI...... WHICH mini do you think should be cloned?

I vote for Buckeroo.....Egyption King.....

I would not clone ANY animal unless they where in danger of becoming extint. The objective of breeding is to improve on the animal(dog, horse, cattle, ect). Just my thoughts.

The horses may look like the original but the temperament would be different. I think it was a cow that I heard about. The original was very calm and gentle, but the clone was exactly opposite. I think you have to watch out when you mess with things like that, you may not like what you get.

It was just supposed to be a hypothetical fun question. Never mind.

I have seen the cloned mules Star and Gem from U of I a few times. They are cute as can be and have wonderful temperments.

It is a interesting question if $ were no object I think I would clone a couple dogs - not sure about any of the minis I have now although would have loved the chance to clone my Warmblood.

Of course that is all in fantasy land if it were a true reality for me I am not sure the decision would be so easy simply cause no matter how much the simularities it would not be the same and in a way it would not be fair to the animal for me to expect it to be the exact same as one I lost.

lol I know I didn't mean to sound political, ok I love Egyptian King, I was looking at a Dels Cowboy colt last night that I liked so I guess I'd be adding Dels Cowboy to the list. Umm… of course buckeroo. I can't think of any more right now.

I know this is supposed to be a fun topic and I don't mean to rain on anyone's fun. But working at Texas A&M and seeing several clones gives me a unique perspective to this topic. Paris Texas was the first horse cloned at TAMU and since then have seen several other clones. Most of the clones had several faults and issues at birth. Even if money was no object, I wouldn't clone any horse. There are no guarantees and many of the results I have seen have not been better animals. And it would be safe to safe not even equal animals.

Carin I would LOVE to learn more about this.....

This has not been discussed in the media that I have seen. Just "Wouldn't it be great to have our (dog, cat, horse or whatever) cloned."

Your perspective is an intriguing one.

Playing it the way Robin meant.....I'd say our little '09 filly out of Kate and by Nort.

OMG she's AWESOME!

I am not an expert nor a dr of course but U of I seems to have been very successful with their cloning program and the mules have done very well both hanging around the barn and on the race track. When I saw them they were not race winners but were healthy and sound and nice to be around

A big no for me. Just my opinion and not meant to step on any toes. My thoughts on the matter......

Ethics.....to know what is right

Morals......to choose, follow, and live by what is right

Come on guys...this was meant to be just a fun, "who would you like to have in your barn" kinda post...if you want to get into a "cloneing ethics" post...go for it...in another post.

(I really would be interested to read all about it...just not here.)

I would love to have a Rowdy, but even more, I would love to have my stallion, Long Shots Texas Lakota

cloned so I could start him as he should have been. He had a rough start his first seven years, and I know he would be a much better horse disposition-wise, had he been raised right. His foals have outstanding minds, and are easily trained, so I know it was his up-brining...or lack of thereof that was the biggest problem.

We have always enjoyed going to the Cutting Horse Futurity and Cutting Horse Championships nearby.

Several super Quarter Horses have been cloned near here. Smart Little Lena who was an outstanding cutting horse has a number of clones which are growing up in this area. Some really nice clones are being trained over in Weatherford, TX.

One mare, also a top cutting horse, has also been cloned. That is Royal Blue Boon who was a top mare.

The AQHA has ruled against any clones getting into the registry. The Jockey Club not only has ruled against clones, but the Jockey Club stands fast on the rule that all matings be live cover and no artificial insemination.

To date, the only performance organization in the US which has said they will allow clones to compete is the NCHA. It will be interesting to see what happens when the clones begin to compete in cutting. I am not clear if these clones will be able to compete in the futurity or only in the aged events.

With more and more clones being raised, it will be interesting to see what the different breed associations and performance organizations will rule about registration and/or showing in performance.

Wonder what the AMHA or AMHR would say? Wonder if they were the right "size" that they would be allowed to be registered or compete?

Poor Dolly the sheep, the first clone, did not live but half of a sheep's life expectancy. She developed arthritis very early and was eventually euthanized. I don't know if it has been researched to see that cloning predisposed Dolly to having a condition of old age earlier than should have happened.

I guess time will tell on these questions. Very interesting thread.

All they would have to do to be registered AMHA is fit the size requirements of the hardship rules, and then they could be crossed over to AMHR. There are no rules forbidding either.

I agree with the above statement!

With that said, I agree with the forum member who said Del's Cowboy (He's ALWAYS made my heart skip a beat).

If I could clone any non-mini: the great Man o' War, hands down!

And even though I just said cloning ethics should be on another post I, too, am very interested in hearing more from txminipinto about what kind of problems the clones she knows of had. (Just for educational purposes!)

GOSH! It is just supposed to be a fun question. I had been thinking, I wonder which mini I would clone, so as not to lose very special genetics when he or she dies. I understand there are a lot etHical questions and a lot of scientific problems involved.

BUT........ just for fun, who?

Hey Robin, if you would clone that filly, THEN could I buy her??????

Robin

ps... I personally wish to clone myself, imperfect as I am and not even caring about the world population and other stuff. I would send my clone out to work and I would stay home and work with my horses.(Oh boy, that ought to get a rise out of some of you! LOL!)

This brings up an interesting thought to me. Im not saying that I would or would not but it would have been fun to raise my mare Hiawatha. She was not brought up to be a people horse and even though I try very hard to spend time with her and spoil her, I often dream of how she would be if I had raised her from the get go. A clone of her would still leave the original Hiawatha though so it would only (maybe) give a slight idea) Id rather see the number 1 Hiawatha from the start....I guess I digress off topic a bit...

I hope I made sense hee hee....
