The perlino stallion is not related to this filly in question.

The bay with the blue blanket was mohogany bay with black points. I clipped him before I took any pics so he's not his natural color. Now as I said, he had black points, mane, tail and legs BUT he did have some very subtle greyish streaks throughout his mane and tail....he was 18 years old, I assumed it was age. But I always thought that silver would completely dilute the mane and tail (and leg) hair not leave any black. So now I'm thinking that possibly, there might be a minimal expression of silver that lets some black show. (?)

I dug through old pics and found some and I'll scan and post in a few minutes.

I did think of something though.....the filly's sire (bay....pic posted) his sire has the silver gene.

With Tami's permission, I'll post a pic of him too.

The Perlino- what colours are his parents??

Silver can lurk in Red and, of course, DDs- sooo........

I'd still like to see pictures of the Bay undressed (I'm funny that way, humour me

All the silvers I have seen did have the completely silver/white/grey mane & tail. However, from what I've heard from others that have seen more silvers than I have, the mane & tail may not be completely silver on the silver bays & silver blacks--there are some that have only a few silver hairs mixed in.

So, with the bay stallion having the grey in his mane & tail he probably is a silver bay. Aren't these Mini colors fun??

What the heck has happened there? That is really weird

though i am not the best colour expert

not even an expert, but even to me that is weird

well anyway weird things happen don't they.

Here's a link to more photos of this filly's dam's background.

I placed the pics so the filly (and her dam) are in the middle of the page. Sire's background on top and dams' on bottom.

For those that had suggested PQing the filly, first of all, she is AMHA eligible but she is going to go over 34" so I won't waste my money. Her dam is not DNA'd nor is her dam's dam. I'm certain that the black mare is the dam of the sorrel mare because I foaled her out (on video). The filly's sire and grandsire's all are DNA'd though so if it were a question of who her sire is, I would have it done but I am absolutely and completely sure of the breedings. I wish there were a test for silver!!

Hmm well from the looks of it the bay with the blanket surely doesnt look very silver to me in fact he looks like a pretty true deep bay- let me go look at the pics see if there is an unblanketd one that would expose something very different but even in blanket i wouldnt think he is silver

Hmm even more interesting after seeing the photos I agree the grandsire on the bottom side is silver but after that well someone is but sure hard to tell by looking unless .. it is truly possible for silver to be a recessive gene and can skip a generation?

Nope!!

I agree the bay grandsire does not look Silver, but the other grandsire does.

Would you put this on the Color Forum????

I sure would....where is it?

You know this is driving me NUTS because last year when this same sorrel mare had a buckskin-dun colt, everyone thought it was silver buckskin, and he did look like it. Unfortunately the colt died when it was 2 weeks old from some weird condition (enlarged thymus gland) so we didn't get to see him mature. I still have pics of him though. I insisted that he could not be silver but now I'm not so sure!

Nope!!

I agree the bay grandsire does not look Silver, but the other grandsire does.

Silver can act differently on different horses, depending on what "modifiers" are involved. I've seen Silver Bays with striking silver/white manes & tails....but very black legs. I've also seen Silver Bays whose legs are so diluted, they are just a tad darker than their body color.....yet their manes & tails have very little "dilution", and show very little lightening....sometimes just a few silvery hairs.

So, with the information that has been given here......I suspect the mare's Bay sire carries Silver, and has passed it to the mare, who in turn passed it to the filly in question.
