My 9 week sorrel filly has white socks and a white "lighting bolt" on her neck. Her tail is sorrel & white. I gave her a clip job and underneath found some dark "blotches" on her skin. I'm assuming because she has a white lighting bolt on neck that she is pinto. Do sorrels usually stay sorrel? Do their true pinto markings appear at birth? Just curious.

True Pinto markings are present at birth with the exception of some Sabino roaning that can increase with age. With the white lightning bolt on her neck, she is a pinto. Sorrel may clip out a different color and gradually change back as the hair grows back out.

I don't know if she has any silver in her background, but many silvers (silver bay that is) look sorrel, then clip out "splotchy" underneath. I had a pinto filly last year that looked very much like a chestnut.. I was a bit surprised because up until then, my stallion had thrown all black based foals and not one red based. She had high white stockings so it was hard to see the typical darker leg color of a silver. When I clipped her you could tell that just barely a little above the stockings was the dark grey/light black color that a silver bay will have. These critters just love to play games with us :bgrin
